I feel your pain. I haven't had a Toyota that had a dead on fuel gauge but I doubt that many cars do. It's perhaps something you get used to if it is at least consistent. On my 07 Camry I can drive it from 70 to 100 miles before it begins to come off of full a little. At half a tank, it will take 10 gallons to fill. At a quarter tank, it will take14 to 15 gallons to fill. The last quarter drops precipitously and the light will come on when I have about 1.5 gallons. The thing here though is that it is consistent and I know where I stand. The reason for this is that the tank itself is not real flat on the bottom and the gauge assumes that it is. I'd describe this as an engineering error because this could easily be fixed.
Back in the day I had a 63 beetle whose gas tank was a big wedge shaped thing. It had a gas gauge, but the folks at Wolfsburg had figured out where half and quarter should actually be and marked the gauge accordingly. Leave it to the Germans to do it right.
