Gen5 RPM to Shift for MPG?

What RPM do you usually try to shift at for some MPG? Does it make that big of a difference? I know what they say but I need some real world advice. Currently I have been doing city driving (stop/go) and getting about 23. Is that good for a Camry? I'm happy with it but if I can go higher it'd be nice.

My car:
06 SE i4 Auto @119k miles.

Also, what are some things I can do to my car within reason (nothing more than say $50)? I've had the car only 5 months so it's no clue really how lately it's had things done to it.

When you purchased the car, did you consult with the seller to ask what was done in regards to maintenance before purchasing the car? I would never buy a car blind without knowing if it was maintained or not.

If you plan to keep the car for awhile or have it last for awhile, I suggest you go and have maintenance done to it.

thats a shitload of miles for an 06. Did you have a mechanic check it before you purchased? If not, I would do so now. With such high mileage, water pump could be going/gone, brakes, oil, etc. Bottom line go get it checked out.

As for the RPM's, dont mash the pedal and you will get decent mileage. It also depends a lot on what type of driving you do(city or highway). For city driving, i think 23mpg is pretty good. I live in NYC so that is true stop and go city driving and i only get 20mpg. I try and keep my rpm's below 2500 but a lot of times i end up going up to 3k off of a stop sign/light.

Well I can tell the last owner was one of those who took it to the dealer every 3 months for an oil change. I've been keeping my car in good repair too and it's been running like new. The brakes and oil are just fine. I get the oil changed every 3 months on the dot at the dealer and my dealer is actually really good.

As far as RPMs 3k isn't bad. Sometimes I go to 4k. *snicker* Would a K&N help? Also I'm thinking of putting Z-Max in next time I get an oil change (it is a cleaner of the oil and gas and works wonders). I used it on my 96 E250 and it definitely runs better.

Its more than just doing oil changes. Belts need to be changed, hoses need to be checked, etc. I suggest taking it to dealer or mechanic and have it checked.

K&N just provides more airflow. Just be gentle on the gas. No matter what product you get, it will not help the mpg. Only you and your foot. Like those sellers on eBay who claim they can give you 30+ HP or an extra 50mpg...its all a hoax.

+1 be gentle on the gas! handle with care! treat it with TLC

real advice? shift at 2200 to 2500 rpm.. don't ride your clutch if you know what i mean.. and always shift to high gears on flat surface roads.. go to the dealer and ask for a history report. make sure the maintenance that wasn't done should be done accordingly. high octane gas will never make your gas mileage higher coz it burns faster.. try to seafoam your car too.. there are stickies in here that guide you in the process..

CONGRATS ON THE PURCHASE!

Ok that's still doable. I know how to move my foot.

As far as a K&N I know it's not a magic bullet but if it helps, well heck yes! Like I said I've been having it checked by the dealer. Keep the tips coming. I know general MPG tips but if there is anything specific to the car I'm all ears.

You may think the Z-Max is smoke and mirrors but it's not. I have noticed that the V8 in the van sounds cleaner and the MPG is playing a bit better.

don't get your oil changed just every 3 months. 3000 miles or 3 months is best. what ever comes first

Well I'll just get it changed at the beginning of next month anyway so I'll just wait for then. Doing it more often is more costly anyway.

Perhaps. But oil technology has improved a lot to where it's safe to go as much as 5 months on an oil change. I do 3 months/4-5000 miles.
