Gen6 Camshaft Sensor A

Drive a 2007 6-cylinder Camry XLE. Friday was driving ~5 mph through a tollbooth when I heard and felt a hard knock and what felt like something dropping under the car. Check engine light came on and car stalled. I drifted to side of road and had car towed to Toyota dealership. I had tried to restart car but it would not turn over. Mechanic said it needed a camshaft position A sensor which needed to be ordered and would be delivered today. I just got a call from dealership who said they received part and installed it but car owuld still not turn over. They called Toyota Servicce Corporate and was told they also needed B sensor which would be shipped for delivery tomorrow. Does this sound right? What do these sensors actually do and what could have caused them to fail? I'm at 35,500 miles in a 36,000 mile warranty so I'm more than a little concerned.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It is not typical of either of these sensors to fail these early. A sensor failing off is very rare.

The dealer must have assumed the one that fell off was bad.

There is one sensor each for the crank and cam pulley. The sensors tell the computer the rotational location of both shafts to allow for proper engine ignition timing.
