Gen 5 HVAC not lighting up

As the thread states, I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my brother's 2003 SE. Tonight, I turned the temperature dial and the fan and temp lights just turned off. The rest of the unit's lighting was still operational such as the buttons as well as the fan modes found on the right side. So far I only removed the HVAC unit, inspected and tried reconnecting. Still doesn't work.

On another note the whole thing didn't work at one time and my brother said he tapped on it in frusturation and it suddenly lit back up.

Is there something I'm missing or have the lights simply burned out? Are they user replaceable? (Didn't seem like it when I took a glimpse in the rear)

Thanks, oh and I tried searching already (I too hate it when people ask questions that are a search away)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it is still functioning as in the fan speed and temperature settings, just not the lighting.
