Yeah, the black color does have a clear coat, so does black cars from Lexus. Practically all cars nowadays have some layer of clear coat on them, otherwise rust may be more likely to occur. You can test it with a microfiber cloth and a bit of polish or light rubbing compound, if you rub it on the paint, and the paint comes off onto your towel, then there is little or none clear coat left on the car, otherwise for new cars, there would always be clear coat on the final step of paint.
I'd recommend more of a car detailing forum for a question like this, namely autogeek.net or even autopia.org.
It depends what you want to do, protect or shine? Synthetics are more for protection, while carnauba's are more for shine.
