02 Camry 5 spd - reverse lights not working

Hi,
I've read the comments of reverse (backup) lights not working for auto transmissions, but where is the switch on a manual transmission?
Since the tail light cluster is not attached to the trunk lid, I don't suspect broken wires from the trunk being open and closed. I've also checked the bulbs. The filaments are intact.
Before the lights failed completely, I did notice the reverse lights would flicker when I engaged reverse. I don't want to take the center console apart if the switch is not near the gear shift.

The backup light switch is on the transmission, should be on top close by the starter.
