5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi guys... I posted this question on the General Discussion forum and got no responses ... wondering if that was not the right place so I am reposting here ... sorry for double entry but could not figure out how to move the original post to here.
Anyway, We just picked up our 2009 Camry SE I4 about a month ago. Couple of weeks ago when the tempreture started dipping below zero I noticed a very odd thing.
When the car is started cold the RPM goes to 1500 and then gradually comes down to 1000 RPM until it is warmed up. This is all fine and well, the problem is when it is sitting at 1000 RPM - not fully warm yet - if I turn the fan on - no A/C just the blower fan - the RPM jumps and holds steady at 1300 to 1500 RPM. The first time this happend I was in drive sitting behind another car and I nearly hit it because the car jumped when the RPM went up to 1500.
Now I had all sorts of other cars, from American to German and different brands of Japanees cars, but I have never seen this... usually this happens when you turn the A/C on and the RPM goes up by maybe 100 or less but to have it jump by 500 RPM and with only the blower fan on is very questionable.
I'd sure appreciate any feedback felow 09 or 08 Camry owners can provide.
I will see if my car does this. I will also guess that the car is adjusting RPM due to the electrical system has to work harder when the fan is on, the alternator is charging the system. Maybe???
Yes it's normal. Mine does that. As west467 said because of cold weather as we live in canada, I guess engine has to work little harder. Don't worry it's normal.

I live in Canada as well, and my camry (2009) does not do that to that extreme, yes the rpm goes up a little, maybe 100 rpm when first turn on the defroster fan but then quickly goes back to about 700 rpm (idle), when first strted in cold weather it idles at 1500 rpm and slowly drops to 700 when warm, but it should not jump rpm to the point where the car lounges forward at a stop light. if it is doing that there is something wrong with the ecm.
Thanks everyone for the reply... I think I am going to go to Markville Toyota and have them take a look... I find this odd, I had many other cars 4Cyl and 6Cyl none of them do this kind of a thing when I used to turn the fan on when the car was not fully warmed up.... I even tried it while the defroster setting is on the off position and blower on the front vents... and the same happens.
Also, I get very crappy gas milage, could these be related? I got 12 liters per 100KM for my first 3 tanks.... this is far from 9.x city and 8.x Toyota advertises for these cars.
My 07' 4 cyl Camry does the same thing - the RPM goes up a bit in both the summer and winter months when turning the fan on, but I don't really notice it anymore.
It depends on how cold it gets. I think that's a Toyota thing entirely because my car starts cold and likes to rev at 1500 RPMs first off too. If it's really cold and can't get the temperature to the halfway point then the car will loose power (lean gas) and that would explain why it's trying to rev higher to keep the heat on. I have a 98 Corolla and an 06 Camry and both do it. But it wouldn't hurt getting things checked out.
7.5 per 100 ! wow that is what I get with my civic... I will get the camry checked out for sure... or maybe look under the hood maybe they put in a V6 by mistake
Anyway just to clarify a bit more, what I describe is only when the car is not warm... when the car is warm then turning the fan on or off makes no dif. in the RPM....

Yes that's what I meant. It does only first time when you start the car and it's too cold outside. It doesn't do all the time.

Anytime you turn on the fan, it will put a load on the engine. That is why you will notice the RPM go up. Now in my case, it don't usually jump up to 300 RPM, maybe slightly up to half of that. The other thing is I'm in California and it doesn't get cold here compared to where you're at, so it will take longer for your car to warm up. Next time, try to give it a few more minutes to let the engine warm up before putting extra load on the engine.
