The Fifith Gear Makes a Big Difference?

I am a current 03 I4 Camry owner with 4-speed automatic. The gen5.5 camry has the same I4 engine but with 1 extra gear, does this make a huge inpact on fuel economy on highway or city driving or acceleration?

Well if you want to compare the difference in fuel economy just check the EPA ratings for your year. I don't know the difference between the manual and automatic but it's usually a MPG or two.

no, the 5th gear was made more performance

its the same on the v6- better acceleration and passing since it can kick down to the right gear, but same gas mileage when cruising

Wait wouldn't an extra gear cause the rpms to be lower at a higher cruising speed resulting in a higher gas milage?

YES and NO! It can go either way, depend very much on the gear ratio; you can have a five speed for performance and you can also have a five speed for economy too. How about a eight speed automatic?

Well since camrys are economy cars, I would guess it is meant for better mileage lol. the more the gears are, the less the engine has to work, which means better mileage

For the Camry, I think it is a little bit of both. The newer generations of Camry are getting bigger, and to keep the four cylinder working within its power band, you have to put in more gears to maintain the performance without sacrificing the economy.

The 5 gear trannie in my 06 LE i4 really gives it a bit of power. Now if I could pop that trannie in my mom's 98 Corolla. *grin*
