5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My wife's 2006 Camry (4 cyl) has 55K miles and recently starting showing the check engine light. The car runs great. I checked the gas cap. No problem.
Anything I can check or do before taking it to the dealership for a potential fleecing?

^ Yes, Autozone and some other auto parts stores will read the codes for you for free. Call around to auto parts stores in your area and ask if they offer this free service. Then report back here with the code or codes and someone will be able to give you some direction.
I guess this wouldn't be covered by the emissions warranty? It is past the 36k bumper to bumper warranty, and I didn't know about Troy's low warranty prices when I bought it.

Sorry, emissions warranty only covers ECM and cat. converter.
Lots of posts in the earlier GEN Camrys about this MIL code and parts replacement.
Did you recently have the oil changed?? My check engine light came on shortly after I had purchased my '06 Camry (I bought it used) and I know the dealership had just serviced the vehicle. I was reading in the service manual that after 4800 miles or so of not resetting the system, the check engine light will come on and the manual says that it is just an oil change prompt.
Each time you have the oil changed, you will need to reset the system.

The light indicating you to change your oil, aka "maintenance req'd" is NOT your check engine light, aka MIL(malfunction indicator light)
Interestingly enough, the dealership said the code indicated a loose gas cap (P0442 on receipt). They inspected the gas cap, put some silicon lubricant on the gasket, reset the code and charged me a little over $40. They insisted that it was only the gas cap - even after I questioned their diagnosis.
