oil use study by dealer

Well my 07 camry 4 cyl started using oil at 17,000 miles. It would use a quart every 3,000 miles and has slowly been worse. Dealer could never find any problems with motor. The factory finaly told the dealer to do an oil use study.By the way the car didn't use a drop of oil all the way to 17,000 miles. My wife took the car to the dealer every 1,000 miles. First 1,000 it was 1/4 quart low. At 2,000 miles it was down another 1/4 quart. At 3,000 miles it had went down 1/2 quart.(deaer had to add oil because it was at the add mark). At 4,000 miles it was down 1/2 quart. That is 1-1/2 quarts in 4,000 miles which is Toyotas oil change interval according to them.(not me I change oil in all my vehicles every 3,000 miles)The car actually used two quarts in that 4,000 miles. I checked it every morning before my wife took it to the dealer. But you can't argue with the dealer, they think they are the all mighty when it comes to auto repair. So now they will present there study to Toyota and go from there.Any other people have this problem, if yes what did dealer do.This is my first Toyota and I am not to pleased with the oil use.None of my other vehicles use oil. Not even my 1986 Chevy 1-ton with a 454 and 135,000 miles towing my 23 foot travel trailer. I AM CONCERNED. Thanks for any input. Eric

How can that much oil use be normal.Do they expect every Toyota owner to keep oil in the trunk and have my wife add oil every 1,000 miles. Bull #%*!

That's normal by nearly ALL auto manufacturer's standards.

Adding oil is easier than filling with gas...

I doubt if Toyota said that.

The study was to satisfy Toyota and hold your hand.

Don't be surprised at the ultimate answer.....

used 5w20 since new, switched to synthetic at 6,000 miles. Try to explain to me why it didn't use any oil all the way to 17,000 miles and then all of a sudden it uses oil. When I say it didn't use oil I mean ZERO. Oil was all the way full every time I checked it. If the dealer and Toyota say it is normal that's fine. But I need to see it in writing that it is normal to NOT USE OIL and then all of a sudden to USE oil. It should be the other way around. During break in it is normal, not after break in.

+ 1 doesn't explain anything. Try to come up with a technical reason.

+1 means I agree with who and what I just quoted in my reply. That should have been obvious...

Acting like a tool and a crybaby won't help your situation.

Variation in production tolerances is a likely cause of your normal oil consumption.
