5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm trying to decide on a powered subwoofer to mount under the seat of my Camry with non-JBL audio. First, how difficult would it be to integrate a powered sub with the Camry's factory stereo? I know absolutely 100% nothing about the non-JBL audio - I couldn't even tell you if it has an internal or external amp (haven't pulled it out yet).
There's a Blaupunkt one for $50 cheaper though (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_023THB2...ures_and_specs) and it has a single 8" woofer rather than an active 5x7 and a passive radiator 5x7 (RMS power is also higher).
Looks like they're about the same overall cabinet size unless I'm reading this incorrectly - which one would you recommend?
I don't want to go all out with a full deck/speaker replacement and sub installation, because I don't want to lose any trunk space and the factory setup has decent high and mid performance. I'm just looking for a little extra kick that'll let me turn down the bass control on the factory deck... on all of my past Camrys, the factory speakers have been MORE than enough for my needs once they didn't have to handle bass anymore (especially in my '97 with its Fujitsu Ten a.k.a. Eclipse audio... anyone know if FT is still making the non-JBL audio for Toyota?)
why not put in some money and upgrade your front speakers with components and your rears too if you wanted. Make sure to amp them all though!
I'm happy with the factory radio and especially the steering wheel controls so I don't want to go for a full overhaul. All I want to do is add a bit more bass to the factory system and free up power to the stock speakers to handle highs and mids, which they're already good at.
Anybody mounted a sub under the seat of a Camry before? Will the underseat heating vents be a problem? I know people mount subs under the seats of their Priuses/Prii/whatever the plural is, but I forget if those have underseat vents.
Wassup...they make adapters that allow you to use the steering wheel controls with aftermarket radios - just FYI...
You can use line-out equipment to connect the external amp(s). So you could revamp your system and still have the factory head unit.
I was told of Rockford and JL factory add-ons that will allow that type of setup to sound "comparable" to a total aftermarket system depending on how you like your sound.

I actually found another couple of "under-seat" subs - one is a full 8" and one is a 10".
One of my friends back in high school had an 8" Fosgate sub powered by a Boss 600W amp and it sounded awesome for everything except rap (which I listen to very little of). Rock, Techno, etc all sounded great.
Ok, just to bring back an old topic...if i were to go ahead and get the Boss Sub mentionied, could the power be taken from the door lines? or would I need to get it from the battery like normal subs?

you can upgrade your head unit to aftermarket and still keep your steering wheel functions with a "PAC-SWI".

Ok, but what about hooking the unit up, would i still need to obtain the power the standard way from the battery, or could I use one of the power lines in the door?

I don't know how the stock JBL amp is powered. Maybe there is some kind of funky connection from the doors....I've never heard of that.
Stick with the battery connection for power.
