5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
If maintained, the 5S-FE should be reliable. I'm not sure how much of a hit you'd take as far as fuel economy goes since driving habits are so subjective, but the Corolla returns FAR superior fuel economy for my own driving. So - it depends on how much fuel economy you're willing to sacrifice for a nicer ride.
I regularly return 18.5 - 28 MPG on my Camry; the '08 and '09 Corollas I had as loaners returned 28.5 - 38.5 MPG under the same conditions. The sacrifice is worth it for me but I won't lie, I will seriously consider a Corolla when the time comes.

I personally would pass on the 5s-fe. I had a 93 camry and that engine is way underpowered for the size of the car. It was a strong engine life-wise, but for my driving habits(all city driving) it returned horrible gas mileage (~17mpg).
Yers, I would agree. I went from a 93 Corolla to a new 99 Camry I4 and it was badly underpowered compared to the Corolla. It's your call. If you don't need the larger car then look for another Corolla.

a 97-01 is a gen 4 camry...both the 2.2L 5s-fe and 3.0L 1mz-fe are very reliable engines, and the automatic transmissions also have very little issues...just make ssure you get one thats been well cared for! (that goes for all used cars)
corollas are just as reliable, but the newer corollas (2003-2008) have had minor issues with oil leaks and computer failures, which can cost $$
your best bet would be a 97-01 camry V6 LE....loaded with pretty much everything you need (abs, airbags, power everything, CD player, etc) and it gets good gas milage and has ample power...the 4cyl isnt bad, but the V6 is definitly the better choice.
for milage, expect 25mpg out of the V6, about 30mpg out of the 4cyl
the corolla is smaller with a smaller engine, and will definitly sip gas at a slower rate than the camry will
FYI i get between 29-32mpg on my 2003 camry 4cyl
ive gotten as high as 38mpg on a highway trip
Hmm a Camry will use quite a bit more fuel than a Corolla. I get about 9.2-9.5L/100km out of my manual gen5 in normal driving, though I've seen 8.3L/100km on the highway. If you can stretch for the newer '02 on Camry you get the new 2AZ engine.
Work out if you're willing to sacrifice some economy for the larger car or if outright economy is your goal. Having gone from an old Corolla to a Camry I'd recommend the Camry, as it's just a much nicer car. In my opinion Corollas just feel a bit cheap and lightweight and are more work to drive, where as the Camry is solid and very comfortable - long trips feel effortless.

Exactly. I love my car. I have a 98 Corolla for mom and it sucks compared to my 06 4 SE.
