Programming an extra key for my 2005 Camry SE 4cyl

Firstly, how can I tell if my car has a transponder in the key?

Secondly, I purchased a key off of ebay a while ago that said it was a transponder key. I brought it to the locksmith, he cut it, and I tried it on my car but it would not turn. Does this mean it is a transponder key?

I did a search but have not found a definitive answer as to whether these are the correct instructions:

FOR 2002+
1.Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2.Insert master key into the ignition cylinder.
3.Cycle the ignition cylinder from ON to OFF 5 times.
4.Open and close the driver side door 6 times.
5.Remove the master key and insert the new duplicate key.
6.DO NOT TURN THE IGNITION CYLINDER ON
7.The new key will be registered after 60 seconds. The THEFT light on the
dashboard will go out, indicating that programming has been completed.
"some 2002 will work using the 1998+ programming."

If i give my VIN to toyota, would they be able to tell me if my key is a transponder key?

i'm wondering how to do this for my 2007 camry le too. does anybody have any ideas? I heard dealership copies range around 70 bucks. I need another spare because I used my valet key as my remote start.

for gen 6 models, the key and remote both have to be programmed by the dealer, by a master technician and on the techstream computer

same goes for gen 5 models with a chip key for the alarm system...i believe you can use the above process but i just use the work techstream because its easier...randy, your key would be fat and not skinny if your car had a chip key, and you would have a red "THEFT" light next to your climate control on the right side
chip keys only came standard on....
2002-2006 SE V6
2002-2006 LE V6
2002-2006 XLE (all models)

all other models have non chip keys, and you can just take one of your keys to toyota and they can make an oem copy for 10 bucks...the process you have randy is the programming for the chip keys...non chip keys, which you most likely have, dont need to be programmed

Thanks for the info Corey!

I had a transponder key cut at my local locksmith and when i tried it, it did not work. Was this because it was a transponder key and not a regular key? I asked about getting my key cut they told me 26 bucks!!! I wish i lived by you Corey!

if your key only opens the door and doesn't start the engine then your key has a transponder chip.

you can make cheap 2 dollar spares at home depot to open your doors if u ever lock it.

CorCamrySE: do you know if there's a price difference between the valet key and the one with the remote?
