For your XLE's:

When you shift to defrost, the air will come in from outside the vehicle.

If the AC light is on, then the outside air will be conditioned. If you push the AC button off, the outside air will not be conditioned.

All the intake air (fresh or recirculated) enters the intake plenum after passing through the evaporator coil. This could give you cooler air even with the AC off.

in my 2002 XLE, when I hit the Auto - it always defaults to the "Leg only" position? (Not sure if it is a malfunction)

If I try to change it to "leg+front", the auto go away).

(Winter time and temp is set anywhere between 70 to 78). I tried hold down the auto button, combination of buttons etc... No luck! (and nothing in owners manual)

recirculation automatically turns off in like 3 minutes when its cold. in hot or warm days, it would stay on until i turn it off, so yea temp does have a factor in it
