I don't want to do it permanently, but 2-3 mins is a ridiculously short amount of time for it to auto-reset to off.
I travel a lot and it is not uncommon to get stuck behind semi-trucks dumping serious exhaust fumes for extended periods of time. As soon as I'm able to pass the offender, I generally open all my windows and blow as much "fresh" air in as possible. Keep in mind that just because you can't smell or see the exhaust fumes normally, you are basically traveling in a tunnel of CO, NOx and NMHC's whenever you are traveling on a busy highway, it's hardly "fresh" air.
Thanks for the 5 second tip, I'll try it next time I am driving it, as today the wife took it to work and I have her car.

Then it makes perfect sense for you. BTW, mine stays on recirc for longer than 2-3 mins, more like 10-15 mins....
There are all kinds of useful information in your Owners manual to avoid wasted posts in the future......
And in a lot of cases, I would agree. But this trick IS NOT in the owner's manual. However, I think it was discussed a while back, so the search would have been helpful.
So your Camry's are forced to default to fresh air after a set period? That's a bit of a nuisance. I've seen a couple of cars here that will default to it when the car is turned off then back on, but none that change back after a set period of time. I wonder why they make little differences in the models between regions.
Yes, if you just tap the recycle air, after 2-3 minutes it turns itself back to fresh air automatically.
djkor - that car of yours is beautiful. Love the color and the styling differences. I really wish they offered those here!
I find my AC doesnt pump out "COLD" air when its 80+ out. Yes its "COOL" air. But not "COLD". So i use the recycle mode and the air comes out much colder.

My 09 XLE with dual-zone AC also has this feature that I'd rather not have - it resets to outside air in cold mornings. Doesn't do that at all in warmer days. I've tried to hold the recirc button for several seconds but it doesn't work. After driving the car for about 20 minutes with a warmer cabin (outside temp around 28 degrees F), this feature went away. I think Toyota designed this feature to prevent inside moisture/fog on the windshield but I prefer to have total manual control to avoid exhaust from other vehicles. Does anyone have a better idea - does the 5-second hold depend on which air mode (foot area, upper area vent...) is on? I really would like to be able to override the default setting.
What's been pondering me for awhile is the air conditioner. The Air Condition is turned off. Auto is turned off. But when you position the outlet to use dashboard air (either defrost or anything related to defrost) it blows out cold air as if the A/C is on, but the light is off.

Any idea?
All defrost modes run A/C, they started this years ago to keep the compressors running in wintertime so that come summertime, its not locked up from lack of use.
