5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Last year we bought a new Camry. The front tires were wearing unevenly (outer edges wearing much faster than inside edges - Bridgestone Turanza). So Toyota aligned the car, rotated the tires at 8k miles. The tires that were rotated to the front were like new (they were on the rear of a Front wheel drive car). Now at 14k they're not wearing evenly - outer edges still wearing out faster, just not as bad. The outside of the tire is almost slick!! with only 6k on the front They're saying it not out of alignment..I talked to Toyota and the Toyota dealer about a partial credit on a new set of tires, and they don't give a sh*t. Dealer says "Best you can hope for on the factory tires is 25k, and that's the way they wear". They said I have an issue with Bridgestone. I called them up, apparently they don't give mileage ratings for OEM tires - they are built to Toyota's specifiations which apparently isn't worth a sh*t.
So what I have learned today is Toyota and Bridgestone have came together to put a very low quality tire.
Is it possible for the tires to still wear unevenly, even though (according to the dealer) it's aligned properly? I'll try to post a pic later.
New tires are coming, it just irks me when I spend a chunk of money on a new car and it comes with inferior equipment. That is a big disappointment from Toyota as far as I'm concerned.
My Camry came with the Toyo Proxes J-33 tires. I have 11k miles so far and I can already tell they won't make it to 20k. A bit of uneven wear on the outer edge, and they just don't "feel" new anymore. I can't wait until they wear out though, then I can justify buying some good tires.
You guys are accepting it better than me. I expect better.... When most all passenger tires are rated at a minimum 40k, that's the least I expect. I don't expect 80k Michelens, but I don't expect the crap Toyota puts on there from the factory either.
I am at 33,500 on my factory Michelins and they will make it to 40,000 with no problems. Of course, it doesn't help that I will hit 40,000 within 18 months of owning the vehicle either!
I made 33,000 miles or so on my factory bridgestones, they sucked in every aspect of a tire, BUT they wore evenly.
I would say there are two issues here, one is the oem tires are just crappy, but two is that your tires should wear evenly because they are no so crappy that they wear unevenly by design.
Get the print out from toyota for your alignment specs and then take the car to an independent alignment shop and get another opinion, show them the car with the oddly worn tires and the printout
My 95 camry would not wear tires evenly under any condition and no one could ever find anything wrong. I bought quality tires for it and had it aligned every 6 months. The tires always wore on the edges first and was always out of alignment. Neither Toyota, my normal mechanic or 3 independent tire shops could ever find anything wrong with the car or the alignment parts.
I drove that car for 150k miles and just put up with it.
Now that i have a 2005, I have no alignment issues and my tires wear perfectly even all around. I am the same driver and have driven the same roads for the last 15 years, nothing has changed except the car.
My Toyo j33's lasted 9000 miles, replaced with Michelin primacy
My alignment was off from the factory, Toyota gives you one free alignment under warranty, but will not replace the ruined tires from a bad alignment.
both front tires off equally off, leading me to believe it was set wrong at the Kentucky factory.
The bridgestones suck, we have people coming in at 20k and they need tires. Now the michelins last way longer 50k pretty easy. Keep the tire pressure around 36psi all the way around, alingments every 15k and rotate the tires every 5k and they will last. Usally its people who dont rotate and keep the tires low on air and it kills them.
My stock Toyos J33 lasted only 13 K miles. Were worn down badly despite very regular tire rotations and keeping pressure at 34 lbs. Could not stand the howling sound it was making anymore. Replaced them with Yokohamas Avid V4 because of their high 500 wear rating. Well, got only 24K out of these, the front set in the end was down to the wear bars with the outher edge worn down more. Was concerned to keep driving, especially in the wet with them. So replaced them with Turanzas Serenity since I am mainly interested in a smooth, quiet ride and good wet weather handling. Also had the alignment checked which was showing the toe being really off on the front suspension. No wonder it was wearing uneven. It showed me to be more vigilant and get alignments done much more often because it certainly would have extended the life of those Avids .An expensive lesson. Planning to take out a life time alignment contract with a good shop, ideally having the Hunter machine. Hope to get past 40K with these 450 wear rated Turanzas which give you a 50K mile warranty.

Reason: clarrifying real milage in first sentence
Wow, 9k and 13k miles for the J33s? Did they really need to be replaced, or did you just want to replace them early?
The front tires were ruined by the alignment being off, but yes they wear out fast, they were almost bald when I took them off. The Michelin Primacy
are holding up well.
