The rubber band idea wouldn't be a bad one if we could find a nice black or clear band or even a belt that would fit tightly and be thin and wide, say 1/4" wide or so. If it was tight enough, it wouldn't slip and you could position it. I'd even consider glueing it if it worked out well enough.
I've just never been in a car before that had no texture on the controls.
I may do some searching in a hobby store and/or sewing machine store for tiny belts that might work.

I couldn't agree with you more, the knobs are terrible. I would love to see one or two grooves cut around the circumference of each knob and a nice rubber or silicone o-ring set into the groove. Rubber bands would rot out in just a matter of months, so i wouldn't recommend gluing them to your controls.
Does anybody know if the knobs themselves can be removed without having to remove the entire HVAC controls assembly? If I can remove each of the three knobs it'd make adding texture/grip to them much less difficult.
I remember seeing a thread about this a while back and thinking to myself... "wtf"
and now another one? Seriously is it that hard?
Anyways why not try something like maybe a hot glue gun and putting a dab of glue at. 12,3,6,9 o'clock on the knobs for grip? Maybe a bit of clear silicone? I cant think of a good product to use right now but that would sure increase the "grip"
Try cutting strips of skate board tape and wrapping them around the knob. I use them for extra grip on some of my small handguns and it works great. A liitle rough on the hands but I can assure you a great grip on the knob. If you search around you can find it in different colors.
