howdy folks,
am going for an oil change tomorrow for my nearly 2 year old 2007 camry with 15000 miles on it. the dealer is gonna want to clean, lube and adjust my rear brake drums (they're for the emergency brakes only) for $50.
is this a good idea? or should I pass?
any comments greatly appreciated.
sincerely,
chas
I just did my 15000 service a few days ago. That is, regular oil change only.
They also checked and adjusted my brakes for free (included in the service), and it's not a Minor / Intermediate / Major service. Just regular oil change is what you need.
I see.
the woman on the phone when I made the appmt for the oil change said somethin about doing a service for $450. I think I'll pass on that.
as for the rear brakes drums adjustment (like I said they're for the emergency brakes only), are you pretty confident that I don't need that. it would cost $50.
my e-brake feels fine. I remember the service manager saying that you need to get the thing cleaned lubed and adjusted every so often though or it causes problems with the regular disc stopping brakes. (the rear regular stopping brakes are disc. the rear drums are emergency brakes only).
any comments or thoughts??

Do it if it makes you feel better...............your dealer will love you.
so its not necessary.
ok thanks.
the service manager sounded quite convincing when he talked about it though.
any more comments or thoughts greatly appreciated.
does anyone know what the service manager at the dealership was talking about when he said to get the rear brake drums cleaned lube and adjusted every so many miles???????.................or it would mess up the regular disc brakes.........he seemed honest and trustworthy and like he knew what he was talking about.

I do it occasionally so I don't have to pull the lever as far. The self adjust doesn't always seem to work so it does need adjustment occasionally, but I dunno about cleaning. The drums are only used when parking or when pulling the lever; there is no effect on the operation of the rear disc brakes. Only on cars that have rear drums is adjustment of the rear drums necessary for optimum function.
Well, here in my dealers, they have different kinds of service. See this?
Fellow Californian isnt it amazing what thieves we have doing business here? $99 to clean your throttle body try $8 for a can of seafoam, some rags and 20 minutes work...i wouldnt go to this place unless i had to. And how much better good is a $134 battery anyway, at that price i better be able to shut off the engine and drive the car off of it.
