5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys, i have an 09 Camry manual transmission with the auto on/off headlights. if I'm not mistaken they go off when the car is turned off and the door open and closes. I had a remote car starter put in the first week of Jan. and in order for that to work with the manual transmission i need to have the car running, hit the button, take the key out of the ignition (the car will still be running), and then get out of the car and shut the door, the car then shuts off. my problem is that my headlights wont shut off. I'm guessing because the car shuts off when the door is shut and then the door doesn't realize its been opened and closed. i would just open the door again or pulse the door switch but then the car starter is kicked off for safety reasons.
I tried to call the people that put it in and their response was, turn the light switch off when you get out of the car...which isnt a problem but one of the reasons i bought the car is because of the auto headlights.
so my question to anyone that will help me is if you have any ideas? lol maybe if i re-root a wire to shut off the lights when the car's key is in the off position?
Any help would be greatly appreciatted

I have a remote start and I leave mine on OFF. If I wanted on AUTO, I would get in and switch to the AUTO. However, have you waited a couple of mins to see if the lights turn off automatically?
One reason it might not work is because when you auto start, the DRL/Hi beam turn on (with stalk turned to OFF). I would not go and mess with the wiring. Is it that hard to flip the stalk into AUTO when you get in the car?

Just wondering... Why would you do that. I'm assuming your car's not boosted so theres no cooldown period?

His car is a manual. He's pretty much putting the car in VALET mode where the car is still running and he can take the key out. Once he closes the door, the engine turns off. So its not a cool down period. Its the only way for a manual to autostart. Its not like automatics where you just hit the button and it starts.
Like on manuals...some or all (i dont drive stick so I dont know) manual cars require pressing the clutch in order to start the car. Since he's autostarting, you cant be inside the house and start the engine without pressing the clutch. So the brain of the remote start tricks it into thinking the clutch is pressed.
I've seen remote start on gene's car. he spent 2 days installing it, and it fires up and shuts down just like an automatic. of course his car needs to be in neutral but yeah

Just looked at my Viper 5701 and it also said that car is in neutral and handbrakes applied. I guess its different procedure depending on manufacturer.
Here's instructions for my remote start if I had manual transmission
If the vehicle has manual transmission the proper steps must be followed
before leaving the parked vehicle or the remote start feature is
disabled.
1. Put the transmission in neutral.
2. Press on the vehicle’s foot brake.
3. Apply the emergency brake.
4. Release the vehicle’s foot brake.
Note: Pressing the brake again after this step will disable the
remote start feature.
5. Within 15 seconds activate the remote start from the remote.
6. The parking lights will flash confirming that the remote start is
active.
7. Turn off the ignition (the car should stay running when key is
turned off).
8. Exit the vehicle.
9. Arm the alarm (the vehicle should shut off when arming the
system).
You can now remote start the vehicle. If a door is opened or if the
alarm is triggered before the next remote start activation the system
will not remote start.
lol yea it seems like everyone is saying just turn the lights off lol...but i keep forgetting to do so. all the cars I've owned had the auto feature for the lights and i'm trying to retain that feature lol...I've forgotten every time i get out of the car now lol sometimes i remember when i get out and have to go through the process again. and sometimes i forget and my battery dies.
i'm probably going to go through the manuals and find a way to get the lights to turn off when the key is in the off position. my buddy has a impeza that does that so its gotta be able to be done...

yeah that can be done. Easily if you know what you're doing. You just have to tap that wire into the... i believe ignition wire? I forget. You can PM lammydi . He tapped his foglights and his halo lights into this certain wire, and it shuts off every time his ignition is off.
or you can PM sik camry. His HID foglights are tapped in this same way.

wouldnt if shut off automatically after a few secs/mins. i know my parents 07 Se when i leave the lights on auto, shut the car off, press lock. few moments later they will turn of automatically. or press the lock button twice and it will turn off. not sure if that applies with remote start though.

yup, this is exactly what i was thinking. my lights turn off automatically when i leave the car turned off and walk away from it, within maybe 30secs to 1 minute (even if the headlight stalk is on ON).
pressing the lock button on the keyfob WILL turn off the lights as well.
i always thought AUTO mode on the headlight stalk was for the headlights to turn on and off depending on the light situation outside.
example: when going into a tunnel and headlight stalk is on AUTO, within seconds, the headlights automatically fire up. when outside of the tunnel and under the sun already, headlights turn off.
yes what you are saying is correct if you shut the car off the normal way, but try shutting the car off and just sitting in the car without opening the door, the lights will never go off, so the same thing applies with my remote start, the car shuts off when the door is shut, so the car doesnt no that i'm not in the car, therefore leaving the lights on.

i just ran down and did a test. on both ON and auto, the lights did not turn off when i did not open the door and shut off the engine. it only turns off when i exit the car and press the lock key twice.
maybe you should slap a post-it note on your a-pillar saying "turn lights off" lol

The AUTO does turn on/off depending on light situation. However, I dont know if it goes by amount of light or time. When I have it set to AUTO, my DRL turns on at least for the short time that I used it
