Canada dealership used wrong oil?

According to the toyota camry 2007 manual the recommended oil is either 5w20 or 0w20 for a 4 cylinder camry.

I requested synthetic oil.

I checked the invoice when I got home and it said 5w30 synthetic. Also found a bottle of mobil 1 5w30 synthetic oil on the passenger floor.

Will it harm the engine? Should I get it replaced with the correct oil or will it make a difference?

thanks in advance for advice...

Max,

It will not hurt the engine but it is thicker than spec'd on the car as you noted. The funny thing is I think that a Euro spec Camry runs 5W-30 oil. It also has a different spec (ACEA instead of API)) with a much longer OCI. The thinner API spec'd oils are more for mileage improvements to help the CAFE stds for the companies selling in the US market.

Same thing happened to me on my first oil change, the general consensus was that it won't harm anything. On my next oil change, however, I switched to Mobil 1 5W-20 and have stuck with that since.

On a side note, I was in Toronto a few weeks ago and had to get an oil change up there. The dealership said they were out of synthetic oil and only had regular, which seemed odd to me. Luckily I had a jug of Mobil 1 with me.

Maybe this will help you,
My gen 5 camry 2.4 with 250000 km runs still perfect. I always used half synth. oil 10 w 40. I did oil changing at 15000 km.
Since august 2008 I'm the happy owner of an gen 6 camry 2.4. The engine was filled with 5w 20 oil.
When I first changed oil, it came out like water. I think, this is very thin for good lubrication.

The new oil I used then was the same 10 w 40 half synth. Now the motor is running much quiter and also with cold weather no problem at all. I do oil change at 15000 km.
So 10 w 30 seems to me no problem at all for your camry.
Good luck,
AloRock
