Evidently if you use certain Synthetic oils such as Royal Purple it may throw a VVT-I code. They appear to be incompatible with the VVT system. I know the Camry and Corolla are affected. As far as the rest I am attempting to get more info.
I have not heard of any problem using Mobil 1 or Amsoil as yet but that doesn't mean they are ok.

ive been using mobil 1 on my 2003 SE 2az-fe since way back in 2006 and ive never thrown a code for anything
a friend of mine has a 2004 XLE 2az-fe and he uses AMSoil and he has never thrown a code either

I used to use Royal Purple on my Gen5 Camry for 4 years and never had any code shown up. I switched to Mobil 1 for my Gen6 because I can easily buy them from Walmart now.
