2007 Camry SE (2.4L)

Hey all, I got about 33,500 miles on my Camry and is about to go out of warranty. I recently noticed a vibration when I first start my engine and back out of the driveway. It'll shake a bit, then when I put it in drive and start to accelerate, it goes away. This only happens when I have concluded backing up out of the driveway. Am I freaking out or is this due to the cold weather that causes the engine to shake a bit when we first start our cars? I know I have to get my brakes dusted and cleaned, but don't know if there is any other problem. Any advice would be appreciated, of course!

Look at the tach if you can. That may provide a clue.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the tach?

Tach = Tachometer (RPM Gauge)... what do you mean you need to get your brakes dusted?
Have you considered bringing the car to the dealer and asking them about the problem before you run out of warr.? That is your best bet.

Right. It is a measure of how many revolutions per minute your engine rotates (don't quote me but I think it's at the crank). When you idle usually in park it is about 7-900 depending on the car. When you drop it into a gear (R, D, or 1st), it revs a little lower sometimes. If it is cutting out the tachometer will show an unusual idle like 400 RPM or something strange.

I just got to push down hard on my brakes for the car to stop, but I see that there is still a bit of padding left.

What causes the engine to curiously idle under 500 rpm?

I ment if it was doing weird stuff like maybe a cylander wasn't firing right for example. Another thing I've seen is it goes from like 600-1000 RPM rapidly.

Just bring the car to the dealer if you trust him to check out the car without BSing you about how everything is normal. If you know a good mechanic, bring it to him first and then go to the dealer with the problem.

Engine should idle around 700-800 RPM depending on year.

The idle speed is controlled by something called an Air Idle Control value. This valve could need cleaning or have other problems.

The valve adjusts idle speed to compensate for increasing engine loads from the trans being shifted into gear, A/C compressor turning on, power steering being activated.

As others have posted take it to the dealer and have it fixed. Don't let them tell you this is "normal."

Looks like I was not letting the car warm up enough, therefore it was shaking when I put it in reverse. I've since let it warm up for 30 seconds before taking off in the cold weather and the shaking was no longer there.

Let it warm up for a little longer. I let my car warmup while im getting dressed in the morning. It gets really cold here in the winter.

You shouldn't have to let the car warm up any longer than it takes for the oil to circulate thorought the engine. Then drive the car gingerly until it get's a bit warmer. In your climate 30 seconds is probably too long to have to let it warm up before being able to drive it. Take the car in while it is still under warranty and let the dealer know of the problem. You may have to leave the car overnight so they can test it morning cold.

The dealer will just tell you that its normal vibrations for Camrys. I've had a never ending battle with 2 dealers about vibration when stopped and turning A/C on or turning my wheels (Plus highway vibration). They say its normal. Engine mounts are fine, yada yada yada yada. The same old crap routine. Wait until you run out of warranty and then everything you ever thougt was wrong with your car, it will be in the dealer's eyes. You see when the dealer sees you with warranty, he sees about one $, but when you are out of warranty, he sees $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Cause its your hundreds or thousands of dollars compared to the Toyotas warranty work of $100 per vehicle.
