x2 thats my thread above... ive started on my grille... sanding down to the plastic is a PITA... i just bought a hand electric sander and even with that, its taking a lot of time.. I am using 40 grit to get rid of the chrome.

I also bought adhesion promoter, base coat and clear coat from http://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint.asp but i think IIRC, as per GeorgiaHybrid, he stated that the adhesion promoter needed to be done right before base coat..

20 or 40 grit will do the trick. There really isnt any sandpaper lower than that (at least i dont think so)

Just remember a few things about sandpaper. The rougher you go, the faster the paint will come off and the easier it is to remove too much base material. It will also take a LOT more work to get rid of the scratches left by the coarse paper. It will also depend if you are using power tools or sanding by hand.

If working steel I tend to use 80 to 120 grit for quick paint removal but with the soft plastics like you are working with here, I like paper in the 120 to 200 grit range. It will take a little longer to remove the paint but make the rest of the prep work go easier. If working by hand, use a flexible sanding block (to keep your lines straight and not groove your surface) and finish with a 400 to 600 grit paper and then go to paint.

If you require a filler after sanding, make sure that you use a flexible style filler designed for bumper covers to prevent cracking. Your local auto paint and body shop supply store can be your best friend here if you ask them for some help.
