slow shifting to reverse?

I just got a 09 camry a month ago and yesterday i let my cousin borrowed it because she was learning to drive. while practicing, she got nervous and shifted from D to P without stepping on the brakes, which caused a loud noise. I didnt want anything to happen to my transmission so this morning i was shifting my gears from N to R and N to D back and forth. I noticed that when i shift from N to D, i can feel the gear shifting instantly. but from N to R, it took like 1 sec for the shifting to happen. Is this normal? or am i just being paranoid? since today is sunday, i couldn't contact my mechanic. Please any help would be appreciated.

was the vehicle moving when she shifted it from drive to park? if she was, how fast was she going?

if she was going anything above 10mph, she may have broken an engine mount, which would cause a jumping or harshness to your gear shifting.

well the car was only going around 5 mph and when i shift gears it doesnt jerk harshly its just that the car takes longer to 'engage' when shifting into Reverse compare to shifting to Drive.

Shifting to R is slower than shifting into D, you can feel the car shake into Reverse gear.
I'm not one of those people that shifts back and forth from R to D without at least holding the brakes for a second.

She did not kill your tranny, don't worry. It may have added a few months of wear onto it though.

Don't let newbies drive a new car.

From Park or Neutral, to Reverse or Drive it's about .5 secs for me. It's not instant. But that's for me.

That sound you heard was the parking lug engaging. The transmision locks the drivetrain when you put it in park. Try parking on a slight hill, put the trans in park and leave the parking brake off. Slowly take your foot off the brake. You should feel the car roll a little before stopping. If it does this still, your car should be okay.

I think you might be a bit paranoid. But get it checked out none the less. You should really go over the basics with her before she actually drives. Like when i taught some people how to drive stick i had a nice 15 min talk about what to do in what situation and if you wanted to do this, what would be required to do it. So eg if you wanted to go to park, you would need to be stopped and pressing on the brakes.

There are two things which a man should NEVER EVER loan out: his woman and his car.

As for the tranny, don't worry. I don't think anything is damaged. For me, going into R or D takes about the same time. As long as R does engage, and you don't hear clunking or extra jerkiness it's alright.

Sometimes (especially on a cold engine), shifting into reverse takes a little longer and shifts a little harder than when the engine is warm. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Keep an ear open for the next couple hundred miles and see if you hear any weird noises and if you do, have it checked out.
