5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So I got my Camry about a 11 months ago exactly, and with 61xx miles on it, I'm starting to get some heavy torque steer, or sliding of the car when I press the throttle heavy from start up, maybe 60-70% throttle (cause sometimes I'm late to school). Maybe I'm supposed to get Torque steer or sometimes on hard turns (90 degree) I'd have to oversteer a bit.
Well at first I thought it was just the car, but when I noticed one day while pumping gas, my tire treads were really weird, and when I had my intake installed, my mechanic told me to go check it out at the dealer. I mean, I'm not doing donuts or burnouts or whatever, just daily driving, not much speeding, maybe taking corners a bit fast and the occasional "launch" from red lights.
I had my tires swapped (front <-> rear) @ 5k miles. But it's still bad. Maybe I just need to take things a big lighter or do I need to get my alignment checked? I was thinking about getting new rims and tires at the same time too, 18" or 19" with some Falken or Pirelli tires, all-around or Racing.
Here's some pictures, I'm not sure if you guys go through wheels this fast, but the asphalt is just ripping my treads apart.
Front (keep in mind, i swapped them @ 5k miles, & is a recent pic.)
Some of the teeths are getting bent upwards so you have some extra rubber sticking upwards, not sure if you can tell.
dude my front tires are wearing quick, almost starting to look like a cross between your front and rear tires. i have more then the pic labeled rear and like mayb less then the pic labeled front.. only 45xx on it i always launch pretty quickly, usually do 80-90... ish... on the freeway.. and when its raining, i have fun with the car... sometimes take corners FAST lol.. hmm i'll take a pic and show u soon i guess, but uhhh mine are going quick... becuz i cant keep my foot off the gas pedal

MM cause my rear just looks like erasers
Wow and yours is just an I4, imagine them if you had a V6 lol.
Yeah well hopefully I'm not the only one with this problem, maybe Toyo tires just are meant to get eaten up like this or maybe we need to get somethin' check (even if it is our foot).
well mayb im just exaggerating? i have noticed the front tires having alot less treads then the rear, but im pretty sure its within how i described it, i'll check it out tomarrow, i always mess with my car on my day off from work lol
yea i just got the 4 banger version, i wanna try the v6, or peach's i4 instead... the i4 is fun to drive tho, i like it, it really pulls on the freeway haha
Your foot is too heavy for sure, but also look at the tire wear value on the tire. 220. Soft rubber for a smooth ride that wears quickly. When it is time, replace them with a tire value in the 700-800 range.

I've been driving my SE V6 for 62000KM so far and just this spring I will be replacing my all-seasons. I use winter tires during winter, but even so, my all-seasons for sure have about 40000-45000KM on them.
Torque steer is normal but, I don't understand how you can cause it with the underpowered 160hp motor...You must be taking your turns too fast every time in order to create such wear on the tires.

I totally agree with you. It's because of the 220 treadwear and some burnouts im sure. I used to have 300 treadwear on my gen5 and they were gone pretty soon because of some abuse. I think 600 are the best because they are not too hard and good for cold weather.
just follow the speed limit on turns and don't be heavy on the gas.
im on my 2nd set on tires now. the first one lasted me 60k miles and now i have a 260 treadwear on my steelies and its still has 70% life on them after 35k miles.
on my 18" i have 360 treadwear just used it for 1k miles still look like brand new (summer use only).
take note never had an alignment since i bought the car.
Those rears are underinflated, notice the last tread is pretty much gone, but your center tread is still "meh". If it was from cornering you'd be wearing out the very edges of the tread up onto the sidewall some.
And I agree the 220 is not going to last long at all. Keep in mind there is no standard to which treadwear is measured, each manufacturer can rate them differently. When you look for new tires look for high mileage guarantees (50-60k) and not so much the treadwear.
I'd get your alignment checked out - certainly before you buy new tires and wear those out quickly as well. Hard to say from the pictures, but it looks like the tread wear isn't even across the width of the tire. I.e. if you run your hand across the width you probably feel that the rubber is higher on one side of each tread groove than it is on the other. Shows the tread is being deformed by the tire not running down the road in proper alignment. Now some of that can come from quick cornering but then I'd expect to see the tread edges worn down most of all and that's not the case with yours.
Get an alignment done, up the pressure some, and you should be able to get some more miles out of them and the handling should improve as well.
Treadwear=220 says it all. I had the Toyo Proxies J33 on my SE V6 and changed them out at 20K. Tires were humming at 12K and I rotate every 5K, go figure.

Yeah I don't know how the first 5k got em worn out so quickly. We'll see as it approaches 10k..I think for the meantime i will get an alignment check as well as look for new rims/tires. I'm thinking of 18s or 19s, I'm not sure what kind of tires to complement them with however. Any suggestions?
