Question Questioning brake job advice..

I looked in the service manual and for a R&R on the calipers there are some dust boots and a bushing on the slide pins that are marked as non-reusable. I called the local dealer for a price quote on the non-reusable parts including the shim kits and it was almost $160. The parts guys then asks me why i needed them as they do not stock any of those. I explained the service manual notation and he looked it up. He checked with the service dept and they said it was all commonly re-used, shims and all. Is that true?

The shims alone are reasonable.

yes its usable unless its broke. are you gonna change your brake pads? remember to clean it with brake cleaner first and put brake caliper grease on all parts. pins, shims, etc..

All I was doing was a pad replacement. I will get the rotors turned if needed for runout etc., but have not yet checked that. No brake problems except pads worn to less than 2 mm on the rear.

So, I can reuse the shims so long as they seem ok on disassembly? Great. Makes the work VERY cost effective, so long as my slide pins are good (fingers crossed!).

Thanks,

Jeff

on the slide pins you just need to clean and grease it.

You'll need to jack and block the car, pull the wheel, have a good socket and ratchet. 14 mm socket I think, a large flat screwdriver for prying, a large C clamp for pressing the piston back in ever so slowly, cleaner, and some rags.

I'm serious! i just changed it last month to be exact 84k (oem still). i have 86k now.
all highway miles.

here's a guy who never had a brake service since he bought the car 05.
now he has 72k still no squeak on the brakes. take note he lives in nyc.

I need to check mine out before i put the rims back on. I still have good bite and the pedal feels good. it might just be the dirt and salt that's causing the squeaking.

Mine are 75k right now on my 07 SE. The rear pads are worst that the front, so they do last that long and they not squeaking yet. I'm changing the rotors to slotted/drilled and new pads once I get them. I travel 70 miles everyday, I'm in Boston and been to NorthCarolina about three times.
