5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A while ago I broke the 2 bolts that are on the air filter box replacing the air filter. The bots broke in half and is still lodged inside of the bottom half of the filter box. I took it to Toyota and they told me $580 to replace and can’t be fixed. A sales manager gave me the phone number of a guy that used to work in the service department saying that he does almost all of the sales people car work on the side. Today I met with him and he said that he is going to have to take the air filter box out to try to get the bottom half of the bolt out. He didn’t say anything about how much its going to cost, so I’m wondering how much a reasonable price would be? I would like to just offer to buy wings and beer but the guy is a lot older than me (with wife and kids late 40’s) and im 21. Also he is Vietnamese and im Korean and there a weird Asian “respect for elders” culture thing so I don’t what to disrespect him by not paying him too much or just not paying him at all…
What is a reasonable price? Nothing needs to be replaced, just fixed. Hes going to take the filter box out and somehow take the screw .
BWT something completely off subject, but is Toyotanation an example of a blog?
he's vietnamese? lemme talk to him then haha jkay. seriously tho, i would prolly get an intake instead.. and yeaaaa taking out broken screws.... NO WAY thats gonna cost 3 digits or even more then 50 bucks.. imo 30 is too much

Yeah right $30. After spending 25k on a car there they better take care of that thing. Go there ask them to let you use their drill and do it yourself.
Or get an intake, You will want one sooner or later. at least now you have an excuse lol

well HE broke it, so the dealer is gonna say alot of dumb stuff and try to get some money some how, thats why theyre saying theres no way to fix it, and wants to replace the thing for like almost 600 bucks! true, it is an excuse for an intake lol. but if i didnt have any money for either then i would take a drill and try to push it out some how, and use wider screws.that'll work no?
Well there is a very cheap solution to this. If he broke what i think he broke (the bolts on the sides of the airbox and not the ones in it that hold the whole thing down) get some zip ties and get to zipping my man. You can even get some for free from a friend and it'll take you 2 min to get it done.

There is a tool that reverses the remaining bolt out. I have forgotten the name. You might want to look into renting it from autozone or similar place. It should take half an hour and you will be done.
