5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I currently own a Maxima, which I love but after almost 350K I am ready to buy.
I am going with a Camry mainly for the comfort with my Maxima I feel every bump in the road. I owned a 1990 Camry and do not recall such a rough ride (which also was hitting 350K).
I am out of the loop on Camrys looking for 03-05 I am confused by the SE, XLE, etc. in a nut shell I want my Camry loaded and must have LEATHER seats.
Also, what do you think of the gas mileage between a 4 & 6 cylinder? Is it worth going with the 4, I don't care for a ton of power, but when I am passing on the Interstate I like to have that get up and go...
All suggestions welcome, love to know everything I can about the cars I purchase.
the Se have sport suspension, as the XLE is more comfort and luxury.
I belive the v6 is about 2mpg less then the i4, I have a v6 and it have enough power to merge on the freeway as compare to my sister i4, take a bit longer.

what year is the i4 ur sis has? i agree with the merging on the freeway, if im by myself, i think its fine... but anyone sitting in the passenger seat also, i'll feel it =/
Well, I currently have an 09 LE I4 lease. Prior to that I have owned a 92, 94, & 95 Camry. The 95 was a V6 LE. As far as mileage goes. An I4 really gets good mileage nowadays. Then again, from all my old models its improved anyway. Gas Mileage just improves across the board with technology and production. You will feel a difference between the V6 and 4 cyl. My current lease is a 4 cyl because I had to rush into it bec of the accident my 95 sustained. I am going back to the V6 because I miss it on my next lease.
As far as leather for the Gen 5, I don't believe you'll find it in a standard LE, and thats going to be 4 cyl anyway. If you want loaded and leather just look into SE's. Power is up to you, but there is a difference. I mean I feel the diff between a 2009 I4 & a Gen 5 V6 at over 156,000K. For the I4 you pretty much need to rev the engine over 4000 rpm and give it a good few seconds to kick in.
LE is the mid-level trim (it's also the most popular), SE is the sporty trim, and XLE is the highest trim.
I've seen many LEs equipped with leather but if you like things like alloys, moonroof, wood trim, auto climate, leather, ABS, stock alarm, etc.. I'd look out for an XLE. As far as I4 vs. V6, the V6 is a great engine but the I4 isn't a slouch either. My advice? Test drive both and see what you like, all things considered.

After reading some of the follow up posts, I should clarify. The I4 on this Camry IS solid and actually gets me along better than some of the other 4 cylinders I come across on the road. Just not right to compare it to the V6 is what I meant - 158 vs 268 hp makes it pretty clear. But if you go to the Toyota website and pull up the side by side comparison, youre going to see how the LE model can stack up against ANY I4 in its class. The 161 torque really does get you moving, you just need to press the gas to rev higher than 4000 to really get an aggressive start.
You really should test drive, because the automatic transmissions vary from generation to generation thats for sure. I can feel a difference in the downshift and upward rpm need compared to my last Camry. I ought to investigate the differences. And nothing compares to the feel of a test drive. Good luck, let us know

The 1MZ/3MZ in the 5th gen Camrys made between 210-225 horsepower vs. 160 in the 2AZ.
When I compare I4 vs. V6, I'm not looking solely at HP. I look at initial price difference, maintenence, fuel economy, and whether or not the I4 is sufficient to begin with. So IMO, it's a fair comparison, all things considered.
With regards to the 6th gen, I'm curious to see how the new 2.5L 2AR stacks up, not to mention the 6 speed auto. Standard VSC + TC is also nice.
