5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2007 Camry LE, im trying to see if I can run a switch from my independent foglights and mount it down on my side dash panels somewhere. I cant seem to find where the firewall is, I haven't really done this before but my friend has. Hes used to working on Nissans and American Cars, where would the firewall be located for the Camry?
The firewall is the barrier between the engine and the passenger compartment, apparently the engine in 'way back' old cars would ignite and the need to protect the occupants was deemed a necessity. It has become the definition for protection from the outside world for computers and in the building trade to stop a fire from passing into a neighboring apartment or town house.
Anyway-
you need to locate a rubber gasket in this firewall that is roughly on the same horizontal level as the master brake cylinder and when viewed from under the dash, straight up from the accelerator pedal just about as high as you can see. I has a taped up bundle of wires going thru the middle and is almost directly above a gasket with 2 hoses going thru. (These are the heater hoses). It has sort of nipples that (I think) project outward from the passenger compartment (around the wire bundle) towards the front of the car. If you poke a hole thru one of the nipples from the passenger side out to the engine compartment with something like a piece of coathanger wire, use electrical tape to make a smooth connection between the coathangar wire and your wire(s), slick them up with some spit, silicon spray etc. and then you can carefully pull them through.
Hope this helps, I hate the derision that the new guys get here.
Kind of like the guy who wanted to work on his brakes or something and wanted to know how to remove his hubcaps. Or the one who said his temp gauge went hot just before the coolant blew out but then the gauge returned to normal so he wondered if he really needed coolant since the temp was OK according to the gauge. Sometimes the best advice is to seek professional help. May not apply in this case but...
Well I mean its not like im examining a lambo. ITs only a camry, I got it as a project car that I could work with on my free time to learn to do things on my own. My daily ride is a 05 M500

Its not that, if you cant find the firewall then wtf dont even try to do what ever you are doin
BenzML's gotta start somewhere. Looks like he's starting with the firewall
Hint on hunting around the fire wall from the engine compartment, it's dark so get a mirror, might need one on a stick. (auto parts store or make one) While holding a flashlight near your line of sight and close to your head, shine it on the mirror while angling the mirror to view (for example) the rubber gaskets on the firewall. The light will be reflected in the mirror and directed to where you are looking. BTW, those LED headlamps are indispensable for working in tight places and when you need both hands for a proceedure.
I needed to route some zip cord from the battery to the trunk for radio gear. I have a v6. The only place accessible was the grommet surrounding the steering shaft, near the knuckle. had to cut a little slice in the rubber and carefully route the wiring so it would avoid any hot areas as well as prevent it from contacting any moving objects, like the steering.
