5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This is not about the average mpg but the method employed by the computer uses to calculate the average per tank. When I got the car at almost 0 miles, the dealer filled the tank and the average mileage started at 0 and increased as I drove, eventually getting to the 20+ mpg expected for in town driving. Next tank fill up was on the interstate and the mpg display zeroed out but climbed to 30-ish in the next 30 miles. From then on, a fill up would seemingly start with the previous average and vary +/- the mpg as driving conditions dictated. Last tank fill up, we are back to 0 mpg, building up to normally expected mpg's in a few miles.
Anyone have an idea what the mpg calulations are? I don't see a method to zero the running mpg average in the owner's manual like some of the other cars (not Toyo) I have driven.
- Reset your Trip A computer to zero when you fill up the tank to full.
- The next time you fill up, divide Trip A's mileage by total gallons filled.
Tada! Avg MPG.

from the 2 camrys i have(1 me and 1 dad), then i can tell you that every time i/u fill up the tank then the mpg meter gets reset. its based on how you are driving. on the way home, from the gas station i always use, my mpg goes up to say 24mpg. it will then increase/decrease based on how i drive/where i drive.
I was wondering about a feature like this. I know the Corolla S has it. Is this only on the XLE version of camry?
any model with that larger multi info display has it. which i believe is the hybrid and xle. dont remember if the SE has it.

well u can do that and i have and i find that the mpg calculation on the multi info display is very accurate so i stoped doing that.
Dont think SE has it. What a bummer. Even a Corolla has it!
Anyway I employ the Trip A method mentioned above. I usually get around 400 miles for a tank if driving city/highway and around 500+ if I drive mainly highway.

My SE has it. Again, only the one with the moonroof.

lol good to know that it does have it. i think though stuff like this should be standard across the line in 2009. same with the smart key system. off topic:
if the se had the smart key then i would of bought it in a heartbeat. i had like 3 or 4 choices when i was getting my current camry. black xle with nav, my white xle with nav, and i believe 2 gray SE with nav(not sure on the color of the SEs with nav). btw heres a bit of info for everyone... im 19 and my white one is my second camry. had a 07 gray xle v6 with no navi before this :P

Reason: added year of gray one.

Ah well. Lets see, I lost a light bulb, a device that can do simple division, and a glass on my roof. Not much of a loss. My old Camry had a moonroof that I never used. Not worth it stretching my budget for it.

Hahah.. I'm just kiddin' bro, my SE doesn't have it either.
On most of the hybrids we have found that the MFD is off by 1 to 1.5 mpg (on the high side). If you don't record your odometer and just use the trip meter, make sure you set both or just use trip meter B. If you re-set your maint reminder during a tank, it will clear trip meter A and you will not know the mileage.
I avg 21.6 mpg highway - Avg speed is between 75 & 80 on the highway. Can complain as I spoke to a Hybrid owner and he gets around 500 miles on a full tank of gas...about 6 gallons more than I do.

You better check your limited math skills............
