I’m just wondering if I have to contact my auto insurance company and report that I’m switching out my OEM taillights to aftermarket ones? Will they cover the aftermarket parts if I am ever in an accident?

If you let them know what you are doing and have the policy then yes. Also keep all your receipts.
I have a special policy for my car with the add ons, and I have every single receipt to back up the price of things.

The insurance company assumes the car is stock (this includes optional equpment) and if damaged, stolen, etc will payout or fix the car based on this configuration.

Some companies have a Custom Parts and Equipment rider (CPE) that for an additional fee will cover any additional custom type equipment not installed by the manufacturer.

I doubt if few people ever get this insurance. What is the cost of the tailights, at this time if damaged the insurance process would be to replace them with stock lights. Can you afford the loss?
