Gen5 Gen 5 Detailed Rear Drum to Disc DIY

So, here it is like promised.

*Disclaimer*
I take NO responsibility if something goes wrong on your car, as this is a guide to my “personal” swap. This is at your own risk.

List of parts needed:
1: Rear spindles (Caliper, Caliper Bracket, Parking brake components, knuckle)
2: Disc e-brake cables
Optional but recommended:
3: SS Brake Lines (I used Stop Tech, and they are great)
4: 4 new control arm bolts (Especially is in area with road salt)
*Drum hubs can be reused with disc setup

Tools Needed:
1: Socket Set
2: Breaker Bar
3: Torque Wrench
4: Jacks (2)
5: Jack Stands
6: Rubber Mallet
7: 10mm brake line wrench
8: Flat Head Screwdriver
9:
10:

Other Stuff needed:
1: Brake Fluid
2: PB Blaster
3: Brake Parts Cleaner
4:
5:

Remove everything, have fun, took me 2 days….Spray EVERYTHING with PB Blaster at least a day before, and spray several times until time for the work. Spray the hard line to soft line brake connection. Spray the rear of the backing plate around the knuckle.

1: Install the knuckle for the rear disc brakes.

2: Put some Antiseize around the outside like I did, in case you need to take out the hub again in the future. You’ll understand what I mean when you try to remove it……

3: Put the backing plate onto the hub. I’d recommend using the hubs you had on your car, as long as you know they are good. So it will be 1 less thing to worry about.
3a: Place the 4 hub bolts (circled in red) through the back of the backing plate, into the hub, for correct alignment. Using the rubber mallet, gently hammer the backing plate onto the hub.

4: Screw on the hub/backing plate to the knuckle.

5: Screw on the E-Brake cable to the backing plate.
5a: Attach the cable to the bracket on the e-brake assembly (Not together in my picture).
5b: Reasemble the rest of the E-brake components.

6: Plug in the ABS sensor plug (if equipped).

7: Put on Rotor and screw on the Caliper Bracket.

8: Screw on the Caliper.

9: Screw on the brake line (SS recommended).

10: BLEED THE BRAKES!!!!!!!!!!

* I have not connected the e-brake cables yet. 1 came in defective, so waiting on the other.

looks good! pretty straight forward it seems, once you know what needs to be replaced and what doesn't!

looks great! thanks for the DIY

btw, you mentioned in the other thread that you have to use different knuckles, what was the reason? why can't you use the original knuckles?

Thanks!

^ Because Toyota is retarded, seriously..... That was the only bad thing about this!

The Backing plate for the drum and disc is a much different thickness. therefor, the knuckle is made in a different thickness to compensate. On the Gen 3/4, the knuckle was the same, and the backing plates were made the same thickness.

Funny your user id is LE05, cause thats the car this was done to, haha.

great, thats one more thing i have to worry about

do you know off hand which part number it is for the disc knuckles? am I correct in assuming all SE models have disc brakes? SE models show two part numbers 42304-06100 + 42304-48010 (Right Side) whereas the LE models show four part numbers 42304-06090, 42304-06100, 42304-33030, and 42304-48010 (Right Side). The same numbers from the SE on the LE indicate VSC... which I do not have... so its confusing me on which one i need to get.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I'll hopefully be adding more to the writeup when I get the e-brake cables installed.

My Cost:
$160-Spindle's off ebay
$6-Brake Fluid
$50-Aftermarket e-brake cables
$10-Resurface rear rotors that came with spindle's
$27(Normally $36)-4 new control arm bolts
$154(Optional)-Set of 4 StopTech SS brakelines

In reality, it took me 3 days. Keeping in mind this was going on scratch, not knowing what I was doing, and having to wait a day for the 4 control arm bolts to come in at the dealer (since I had to cut them off), and having to wait an entire day for the PB Blaster to soak into the rust to get the hub out. IF I were to do this again, I could likely do it in 1 day (Not counting e-brake cables).

All the rear disc (Both I4 and V6) are the same setup.

The I4 LE's with VSC had rear discs. I'm still not sure as to the 2 diff part numbers on the Disc knuckle's though. I'll ask my parts guy at the dealer next week. I was confused by this too. Best bet is to just buy the entire rear spidle's from a junkyard or ebay (as I did).
