5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
2002 Camry v6, 123,000 m ...
I had some severe drivetrain noise, loud whining at any speed. I replaced the LR and RR hubs, about $500 for the parts. The loud whining is gone.
Now there is a whup whup whup sound at speed. I raised the front end and ran it in gear to listen to the parts. CV driveaxles, bearings, no noise, all was quiet. The tires were not perfect, i could see significant run out so i rotated them hoping the noise would change. It did but not by much at all.
It is not brake or rotor noise could it be i just need some good tires? Would CV driveaxle noise change with weight on it? Does anyone have a clue because i dont?!
the drive axles and CV joints cause a clicking noise, not a whup whup noise...to me, that sounds like cupped or worn tires as they would cause a noise like that.
Thanks for the input CorLexus, does anybody else have any more thoughts? I just spent $65 on a tire because i found one tire with a bad up and down hop and changed it (the old bad one still had plenty of tread left though - damnit). The noise changed only a little bit. The noise seems to be coming from the front, sort of a low howling, CV drive axles i am thinking?
Alot of the time, the rear tires will cup and make the noise you mentioned. if the are cupped, replace the rear tires. cupping of tires are either due to very poor balance or more than likely weak rear struts.
So, you isolate the sound. You said you jacked it up? Jack the front up again on stands. Pull both wheels off and run the car on the jack stands. Still hear the noise? Not related to the tires or wheels. Sound gone? Replace one tire/wheel and try again. Figure out which wheel is the problem or if not related to a wheel, close in to the tranny.

"People who think they know it all are particularly irritating to those of us who do."
I have a 2002 V6 as well and it's a full size spare.
How about coast in neutral and see if you hear the sound. Is the sound constant, or does it come only at certain speeds?
Sometimes jacking the car up and running it on stand may not cause the problem to manifest itself as there is not load on the tires/wheel, bearings, etc.
Depending on how loud the sound is you can still rotate you compact spare and see if the sound goes away. With the compact, you may introduce a different sound but see if you can hear the original sound (noise).
