5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
We often have questions about tires. Here is a new piece experience for me. I am a fan of performance tires and in particular Toyo branded tires. On the Camry, I use Toyo T1R and it is a real good tire - performance wise. Grip, cornering, wet road handling are real good. Some noise dependent on street surface and it is a pure summer tire - no snow or cold weather recommended. The bad - the front set lasted just 8k miles (no, I am not racing). They are shot on the outside edge - alignment of the front is fine, tire pressure was always well controlled. That is an expensive choice for performance - $250/piece with install.
My Michelins are better, they are all season, and they cost about $245 with 45,000 mile factory warranty and 3 year Road Hazard Replacement from TireRack.com
Time to change tire company?
225/45/18 Z rated Michelin Pilot Sport All Season Plus in sig.

It's not the company its the fact that these are ultra high performance summer tires - time to change to rethink what I want (performance vs longevity). Your Michelin are all season and therefore better last much longer. I also have warranty on them but that does not cover wear and tear. I am just surprised how little miles I got out - expected 15-20k, got less than 10k, i.e. factor 2.

Yeah, I like these as well - used to have them on another car and was pleasantly surprised about their value. That was the first tire in my mind to switch to....I will need to swap all 4 corners though.

Time to check Michelin's website.
My tires are Ultra High Performance All Season tires . And they ARE warranted for everything (3 years), 6 years 45,000 for wear (direct from Michelin).
Yea I think its time you consider alternatives. You can get similar grip and better ride in a solid all season tire that will give you more miles.
I really see no reason to run a summer only "no-holds-barred" tire on a Camry.
Even though the mentioned michelin's are all season version of a performance tire, they would probably offer you nearly the same performance characteristics you are used to.
And I bet Toyo has something that would be a good compromise if you really enjoy their quality as much as you say you do.
For Kumho's, I've had nothing but horrible experiences with them (3 seperate times, once was a free replacement of all 4) and have vowed they will never be on any car I own ever again.

Thanks - agreed on your above points, time to rethink. I guess Khumo gives mixed experience. On Toyo - I think they have some very good, decent (like the proxes4), and horrible tires (mostly tires made specific for car mfg to be on the car as sold). Michelin - I will need to look into it, I liked their wintersport M tires.

For Kumho, it depends on the model you're getting. The Ecsta SPT is made from Korea which is a good one. The one that made in China is the one to be avoid.
In my opinion, Mitchelin is way overated for their price. For the same price, I'll take Pirelli anyday.

...I did not know that there are Chinese made Khumo's. So, all SPT are made in Korea? I found that almost all brands have a good mix, i.e. some good, decent, and really bad tires incl Toyo, Michelin, Pirelli, Dunlop, Falken, Bridgestone....really depends which particular model you use.
I had Falken 452 before and they were good. Although they were a little noiser than Nitto NT555 and Kumho Ecsta SPT.
Also for this size 225/45R-18 95Y BSW I can get all 4 tires for $510 locally in Orange County CA.

$510 for a set of the 452 sounds like a great price...that pays for just 2 Toyo T1R's.
