5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
for about a week now,my shifter would visibly move forward and backward in fifth gear corresponding to throttle inputs.now it spits it right out of gear.im thinking either bent shift fork or broken powertrain mount.opinions??

Reason: i said so
If the shifter was rocking around in all gears as you varied the engine rpm then I would guess a bad motor mount. It isn't the shifting fork unless you have it badly adjusted and there is no play. If it is happening only in 5th gear then the gear set itself is maladjusted, chipped, or worn. Again here, likely not the synchronizer. More likely a chipped gear.

Mine does the same in first gear when i go to switch into second. It feels and sounds bad. I'm bringing my car back to the dealer before i do my mods. Last time they tried it i had them drive the car for a while but it didnt do it..go figure.
bad synchro in the trans. Replace or rebuild it unless you like being annoyed. It is a h igh mileage car no doubt, sorry but theres no patch or quick fix.
I had good luck once with a junkyard unit it served me well for quite a while. If you intend to keep the car a long time, id go for the rebuild.
sounds like maybe you could have a chipped or worn gear if it is only in 5th gear, because i know that when ive had cars popping out of all gears it was usually bad motor mounts..
instead of getting it actually rebuilt i am sure you can find one of a camry or a scion for cheap... its highly developed and probably easy to find then pop a new clutch in while your at it and that should be a fun 5-6 hours... well 4 if i do it
well,i removed the engine movement control mount and it was broken so i filled it with polyurethane and fabricated a solid steel replacement to test my theory.it still pops out of 5th.and a solid engine mount sounds like garbage!i was happy to put the real mount back in once the polyurethane dried.it will go into 5th,it will coast all day in 5th,but as soon as i apply throttle-patooey,spits it right out.im leaning toward broken gear.

Yes, our '87 Nova/Corolla has had the same problem for the last 50,000 miles. Fortunately it gets just as good highway gas mileage (about 45) cruising in 4th as it ever did in 5th and is only a little noisier. Apparently this was a pretty common problem in high-mileage Corollas of that vintage since I've run into a couple other people who experienced the same issue.
