05 Camry Rear Defroster

Hey guys.......Wifes 05 Camry rear defroster does not work.....The light on the dash button illuminates but the rear window defroster will not clear (Live in So Cal)......I Googled the problem & read a thread that suggested that the rear defroster relay may have failed......I pulled the relay/fuse cover in the engine bay but could not identify the relay based on the lid legend.........Anyone w/ comments or suggestions, aside from sending it to the monkeys at the dealership, appreciated.........Best Regards, Minus-Pre

Try www.camrystuff.com. You should find electrical troubleshooting section in there. I believe your Camry belongs to generation 5.5.

Good luck,

Sam

Thank you Sam.........I checked out the link & will see If I can de-code the fuse box lid.......I really think the re-defroster relay has failed.
BTW....If anyone else has experienced a failure of the rear defroster please chime in.........Best Regards to all.......Minus-pre (Joe)

Did you check the connections to the rear window? I just repaired this on my girlfriends 02 Prizm last weekend. It was a simple solder job. A cheap $5-$10 solder kit from the hardware store will do the job if you don't already have one. I'm not looking at my Camry right now, but I believe you'll find the connections to the rear window behind the rear side panels, one on each side. They pop right out with a bit of prying after you take out a screw behind the small flap/door on the panel, (assuming that the 05 is similar to the 02). Good luck!

There's more fuzes under the steering wheel area. You'll find the fuze there.

You should be able to hear the relay click when you press the button (obviously when stationary with the radio and fan off). If not that's the first thing to check.

My trouble shooting begins with the grid itself. Check continuity across the grid. If it is open then it isn't going to work regardless of what you do to the rest of the system. If there is continuity then look at the two connections-one to ground and the other from the positive system. Check to see if you have voltage. Then if no voltage go back up stream to the relay and see if you have voltage going into the relay. Check continuity of any fuse in series.
