Those of you with CF hoods on Gen6 Camry

I'm looking to get a CF hood for my Gen6, most likely an Extreme Dimensions OEM style one. The issue is that I'm not sure what to do with the stock hood struts.

For those that have CF hoods, what did you guys do, replace them with weaker struts, or find a way to make a hood prop instead?

I think you misunderstood his question... he hasn't done anything yet and was wondering how to compensate the strength of the hood struts with the weight that is lost on the hood...

OP
I don't have a CF hood, but if i did, I would try using just one of the struts... if that doesn't work use both and 'catch' the hood once you disengage the hood latch

Haha, yeah, I've seen cars with the stock struts that actually broke the first layer of plastic underneath the CF hood.

I was thinking if it would be possible to go to an AutoZone or the such and purchase their "quick struts", they have small struts that are fairly universal, but I don't think their compressive strengths are any less then the stock hood struts though.

Does the lower end Gen6s come with hood props instead, ie the CE or LE? If so, I may consider retrofitting the hood props from their cars.

This is one of the few times that hood struts actually don't come in handy, lol, even the GT-R doesn't have hood struts and uses hood props ironically.

No issues with the stock hood struts though? Does it push the CF hood up too hard or anything like that, or do you try to stop the hood from opening too quickly?

From a lot of the pics here of people with Extreme Dimensions stuff on their car, fitment isn't one of their strong suits IMHO. Some of those gaps are big enough to stick a thumb through,

I know what you mean about the GT-R... when I saw it, I thought to myself, with all the advanced technology and gizmos that they cramed into the car, they couldn't add hydraulic struts to the hood??...

Meh, the GT-R is nice to drive, but it's more or less seen as a rich mans car in a sense, getting closer to Porsche levels, fun car to drive nonetheless of course, but not as fun as an R34. The GT-R takes a lot of driving skill out of the car, when I was driving it, WOT in 6th at around 60mph had no power, until I downshifted to 5th, then I just flew.

Anyways, So any other input on what to do about the hood struts? I know there's at least a few more people that has done CF hoods, what other brands sell it?

I dont use the stock struts on my cf hood. For one they dont mount up and I dont want that pressure on my hood. If you need help removing them just let me know.

rememeber that I am lazy, if it aint there it wasnt ment to be lol,
But anyways its not the best idea to use them on a cf hood, requires to much pressure, Ive had cf hood for yrs and so has my friends and we never use the shocks

I'm sorry you feel that way. If you or anyone you know live in or around the Orange County area, feel free to contact me and we would be more than willing to have you come down and we can test fit a hood for you and take pictures after we install it. I actually just had a 2008 Focus down here (different car, i know) and the hood fit great. His OE hood was actually poor fitting and our Carbon Creations OEM style hood fit better than stock. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I'll be more than happy to assist you!

-Ken

I know Redline has his CF hood hooked up with the stock struts and is just careful to hold his hood down a little when he opens it... otherwise it does go up very quick if you dont but if you know your car you can remember to hold the hood down
