Anyone bought foglights from eBay seller "edixworks"?
I wanted to add fogs to my Gen5, which has the fog light connector.
Plan to do it either:
1.) use the aftermarket switch for ON/ OFF or
2.) tap into side marker lights for ON/OFF.
For option 2, do i just splice the marker light wire like any other regular splicing? (just need to be careful not to splice the wrong wire since there are so many wires in that area, low beams, high beams etc)
Does edixworks' kit have necessary parts for me to do the ^ above options?
i bought fog lights on ebay last 2006 on my le camry. i would suggest just use the wiring harness of the kit and buy an oem fog lens and lamp assy.
why? because after 2-3 years the light output of the lamp assy won't be the same as the day you bought it. before i can drive only with my parklightss and fogs now i can't see anymore. i have to use the low and the fogs.
now im looking for an oem lamp assembly.
you can use the on/off switch and tap it onto side marker lights so that you can turn on/off the fogs while using the side/park lights.
yes they have the necessary parts you need. wire harness, switch and a relay.
the OEM fogs are a little out of my range at the moment, it was quoted at $ 160 EACH... and the OEM stalk (the headlight stalk with the fog switch function) is around $ 110.
"the output is less": is it because of the fog lens getting foggy? or the 9006 light bulb itself? or the connector worn out? something else?
i know its expensive. just try it first the ebay kit. it will last you 2-3 years and then the light out put will lessen. change the bulb 3x already still the same. now i have nokya 9005 bulbs and soon im gonna change the lens.
at first the light output will be good.
For a $21 item, what do you expect out of the quality? If you get the cheap ebay kit, you spent about $45 already. After 2-3 years or even less and you decide to go OEM, you just wasted $45 for what? You could of used that $45 on the OEM.
What amazes me is that people in general (not you specifically) would buy such a cheap product and think its just as good as OEM. Yea, depending on what items they are (phone chargers, cases, etc.). And when they get it, they bitch that it doesnt work no more or its crap. I learned a few times and still learning. I sometimes buy cheap stuff if its dirt cheap. Granted, there are some aftermarket parts that is just as good for a cheaper price but it all depends on what it is. Sorry...just ranting for no reason. Just bored at work.
^ if it is not the bulb, then its probably the fog lens... thats hard to change... is it possible to take apart the fog lights to clean it?
no its not the fog lens its the hole fog light assembly. what i am talking about is the $160 each. you can't change the lens only. the wiring harness on the ebay is good. so, you can use that.
moral of the story "what you pay for is what you get".
If money is an issue. I would just go for the eBay fogs. OEM will cost you $400 for the lights and another $100 for the switch. You'll have to take off the steering wheel to install the switch and will still have to mod. the wiring to get the standalone functionality.
I've looked up close at some OEM fogs on Camrys in my area. I don't doubt that there is a difference in quality. However, the look is pretty much identical when on the car. The OEM fogs have plastic lenses as well, which were all cloudy from the outside and/or the inside. I doubt that even the OEM fogs will be as bright in such a condition. Headlights on cars suffer the same thing over time.
If you get the eBay fogs, you can always change them out when you get the money and you'll already have the standalone wiring and a lighted switch. Heck, they may hold up longer than you have the car. You never know! I also doubt that anyone will know the difference aside from some of the regulars on this forum. For $40, if they last 2 years I'd say you got your money's worth.
Jay, I strongly agree with your statement. Although I have a Gen6, I went with a similar setup. OEM Parts with a wiring harness from another kit. Although its not true OEM,, since I didn’t' get the stalk... I simply tapped into low beam fuse...
I've had fog lamps on my other cars before. Always some problem with the bulb, lens cracking due to over heating, etc. My past experiences taught me that non-oem will not last as long.
icqboy51, I would recommend trying to get the OEM parts off eBay. My setup cost me roughly under $100 (about $50 for fogs, less than $20 for trim, $20 Harness, a few buck for screws, etc)...It really helps to get each Fog lamp assembly separately. Since listings for a single foglight will be much cheaper than buying a pair. Only problem with this is, once you get a RT or LT side, you wont' be able to sleep!!! until you have both sides =)...
About 4 months now...So far, so good, haven't had a problem.
