I decided to get remote start for my 04 camry. I called the dealer and they dont "support" it anymore- won't install it, won't recommend an installer.
I thought by getting an "official" one thru toyota, my extended warranty would still cover it. Obviously, now i need to find one on my own. I've seen viper but I havent really shopped around yet. It doesnt have to have all the bells and whistles out there. I'd be happy if it warmed up my car in winter and cooled it in summer. FWIW, i dont have an alarm system now, so I would consider that with the RS. Suggestions? Thoughts?

I would say go for the alarm while your at it. Its not TOO much more, but if your getting the remote start installed, might as well get the alarm installed.
The product it self isnt too expensive.. but its the labour that kills it.
So if your already paying for all that, might as well pay a bit more and get all the bells and whistle.
A few months ago, I picked up the Viper 5701 for about $200 online. It's a remote start and alarm. Python and Clifford have similar systems (all by Directed Electronics). All the bells and whistles come separate, so if you don't want them, don't buy them. I don't have a garage, so my car is parked outside. I'm love the remote start on the cold winter mornings. For the summer, I might consider getting the add-on that roll down the windows. I've installed car audio in my last two cars, so I wanted to give it a try. I installed it myself and it was a b*tch! Took me three days (lucky I'm out of work, i guess) You'll need an immobilizer bypass and an additional relay to intergrate the 2nd starter wires Point is... invest in a professional install unless you're crazy, like me
btw, the professional install will set you back $250-$400, if not more.

I bought my 5701 including installation and trunk popper for $500. Took them 6 hours to install. They soldered all the wires. I provided immobilizer.
But the 5701 is suppose to be a lot easier to install compared to previous models. I didnt buy an additional relay. If it was required, the installation shop did it.

I'm the only person who drives my car so I have a spare key that I don't use, as well as a Valet key which I'm not even where I put in my apartment.
There are two kinds. Immobilizer bypass acts as if the key was in the ignition. So it technically tricks your car into thinking the key is there. It does not require you to give up your valet key.
You can get one that requires you to give up the valet key. They insert that into the bypass and is hidden somewhere in the car. So this also tricks the car thinking the car is in the ignition. My gf got a remote start from the now closed Circuit City. It was a cheap brand but still made by DEI. It required her to give up her valet key. It didnt have the alarm or any bells or whistles such as anti-grind (comes in handy). There were times where either turned the key too much and you hear the engine grind or sometimes I forgot that I used the remote start and the car is already running.
Go to www.viper.com and search for an authorized installer.
If I did it, I would probably just use Best Buy...
And I would get the Viper 5701 too...
And I would probably give up the Valet Key, never used it, and probably never will.
So does that mean you end up carrying both your regular keys AND the remote? I would prefer to have less on me... can you just leave your keys in your car, and just carry the remote?

The remote isnt even that big. You probably wouldnt even notice it
I guess Viper changed the color of the second remote. Both of my remotes are silver. The black remote is the 1 way. The silver is the 2 way (communicates and lets you know if car is started, alarm is going off, doors locked/unlocked). The 1 way doesnt inform you
Leaving your keys is the most stupidest thing to do. What if they break into your car and they find the keys? If you're going to do that, you might as well just leave the windows down, door open and key in the ignition. Yea, granted what the odds of them breaking in...but that one day you least expect it..your car is gone.
I bought my immobilizer bypass off eBay. You need XK05. Viper has it priced at $100. I paid like $30.
If alarms were like cellphones where I can easily replace or swap, I would get the 5901
I bought my 5701 including installation and trunk popper for $500.
That's a pretty good price. When I was shopping around, Circuit City was offering the unit for $499.99 with free install. But, that's no longer an option
With the gen6, immobilizer bypass is necessary. For the gen5, I'm not sure. angela501 (the original poster) has a gen5. The immobilizer is a split second thing. Put the key in the ignition, the key tells the immobilizer that everything is legit and it's safe to start up. Bypass does the same thing. When you hit the button to remote start, the bypass (program with the key's signal) send a quick message to the immobilizer to say it's safe to start up. So, without the viper remote or key, the everyday thief can't start the car. That's why I'd get a bypass that does not involve a key (you'll need a key to program it, but that's a one-time thing). If you're having someone else install, the XK05 is a nice option. A newer model is the PKALL, a little more expensive (+$10-$20). If you're doing it yourself, this one might be easier.
Yeah... not smart to leave the key in the car. And the key must be in the ignition for immobilizer signal to be sent. Also, if the alarm is tripped, it can be turned off by starting the ignition.
You do have to carry the remote and the toyota key with you. Gen 5'ers (with the key and factory remote separate) might be able to ditch the factory remote. One thing to note, once you've remote started the car, the factory keyless entry won't work. So you need the Viper remote to unlock your doors (and pop the truck, and you'll need an add-on for that). Tho I love the styling of the remote, I don't like carrying both the fat factory key and the viper. I just leave the Viper remote in the house, only use it to remote start the car in the morning, then go old-school and use my actual key to unlock the door Might have to change that when summer comes around.
The 2-way is nice. Hit the button and the remote will tell you if the car has started. You don't have to look outside and look for exhaust vapor or the DRL. Only thing, the batteries drain pretty quick on the 2-way remote. About 2 months. But I found these batteries on ebay for dirt cheap, so i can live with that. I heard the 5901 drains even fast because it's got the LCD screen.
Damn, I'm rambling... I'll stop for now. I hope that was helpful.

I carry my remote. The purpose of the 5701 is for remote start and alarm. So just leaving the remote to just to remote start and leaving it home is pointless. Might as well get a cheaper remote start.
Unless you wear tight tight pants or leather pants, I can justify the remote being a hassle. You can even have the remote dangling out of your pants pocket.
just be careful with the viper 5701 remote. Ihave this same unti on my gen 6 and i lvoe it. the only thing that i regret is the remote, because i put it in my pocket and it broke the circuit board inside the remote itself. DEI knows about this problem. so no i bought a new remote for 90 dollars and now keep my key in my pocket with the remote part outside so i dont have this same problem again. other that that it is a awesome unit.

How did you break it? Leaned on something too hard? I'm actually on my 2nd 2 way remote. The first one stopped working. I would press buttons, hold it down for 2 mins and nothing. Than, I thought my replacement was starting to do the same. The low battery beeps didnt let me know. So I left the remote in the car cuz I was going to take it to the shop. So I decided to change the battery and see. Low and behold, it works again.
Other than that, its a great system.
I actually bought the 5900 and extra 2way remote off ebay for like $200 brand new and was going to have that installed. Was told the 5900 is discontinued and the 5701 is the latest one (back in August 2008). So I went with the 5701 and sold the 5900, extra remote and leather case for remote for $300.

Hey Tim, how much did that shop charge you for installation again? I am tempted to get the 5901 with my tax return

Alarm, trunk solenoid and installation was $540 or something like that. I dont remember. I had my tints done by them as well.
Another authorized Viper dealer/installer is on Northern and Main Street called Crown Auto. Its on the corner right before going on that bridge towards Shea. Across from the funeral home.
I would recommend the guy I went to but his hours are stupid. Opens at 9 and closes at 5. He's only open on Saturday if he has cars to do and its only available via appointment. There were times where I had to go to him to get my Alarm/remote checked out and I left work in LI to go to him to have him look only to tell me to pull the battery or come back another time. Waste of my time and gas. He's kind of snobby too. I hate people like that.
I only went to him because he's been there ever since I moved to the neighborhood and he was close by. I dropped off my car and walked home. When it was time to pick it up, I walked.
I went to Best Sound. Here is a screen shot of authorized Viper dealer/installers along with address and numbers
Damn! I want the 5901 now. HAHA. It has rechargeable battery and charges via USB on the remote.

i got my viper 5901 with installation for 350 total. the guy used to work at LA tint and does sound systems and alarms but now he does alarms part time.
dcemureviews, i asked him about the trunk popper and they said toyota haven't released the wiring to info for him to tap into for trunk pop. and the only way was to install a manual pull system in the trunk. is that the device you had for your trunk?
