Shaved ass today and well, after squashing my hopes for a carbon fiber I decided to just do my own black pearl emblems. Here's a pic of the final product headed into a dehydrator for paint curing.
The lighting doesn't do the justice the sun will do. I'll post pics of that when re-attached.
it was more of a DID it myself here's a final pic lol
I figured why ad nauseum and basically show another thread of...blowdryer....fishing line, paint etc"
There are good enough threads on the topic, thought I'd basically show how it looks.
However, the process was rather long- after removing emblem and glue residue with goo-gone:
3 layers grey primer (duplicolor) *no-need to sand chrome off plastic
3 coats of Dupli color black
4 coats of TAMIYA LACQUER CLEAR PEARL
3 coats of TAMIYA CLEAR
*the tamiya lacquers are excellent (got into them from my scale auto hobby)
Very nice, but I want to see how it looks on the car! Do you think that this model paint will withstand outdoor use? Seems like it might flake off after a few months.
It def has a pearlescence to it, in the sunlight on the car it should show a lil more.
I wondered that myself (re: Tamiya holding up)
It is used on rc and gas powered radio controlled cars subject to weather, mud, etc, not to mention I have used it before, wet-sanded it, polished it, waxed it scrubbed it. It acts like a quality automotive lacquer......
This wasn't enough for me, so I searched and found a few people on AutomotiveForums who used their sprays successfully on their cars.
So I gave it a try
Looks good, can't wait to see how they look on the car. Roughing up the chrome would not have added much labor, why did you skip it? Is it recommended to leave it on for the primer you used? I think I would have sanded them a little.
It's in here somewhere, do a search, someone used primer right on the chrome with no issue. All my post-primer coats took well, and honestly, having de-chromed plastic before, getting the chrome completely off would have had to be the high pressure sandblast, or a chemical solution because of all the angles and crevaces in the nature of the emblem.
we just painted my brothers 07 altima emblems and the chrome on the grill yesterday. but we used metalic black. from dupont. cost less than tamiya paints.
