5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Why does a stock I4 sound like a raspy fart can at part throttle? Its not the exhaust, the sound definitely comes from the engine compartment. It sounds ok at WOT, and acceptable at very light throttle, but just god awful at around 25-50% throttle (guessing). It is so embarrassing that when I have people in the car I have to purposely drive around like a grandpa to keep it from sounding like that.
I had a 2005 LE before and did not sound like this. The 2005 sounded horrible, but more like a junker instead of a fart can of my 2009.
Does a CAI help? How about pulling that nappy tin heat shield off the exhaust manifold?
How can I make it sound smoother?
Even my old 2.5L 4-banger in an old 86 Buick I had sounded better than this.
But its by far the worst sounding 4 I think I've ever heard.
Guess I'll try a K&N and see if it clears its throat a little. I'm not looking for a roar... I'm looking for a smoother non-tinny rev.
Well, if you really think it is too loud, maybe one of the these "super quiet" labeled mufflers from Walker will do. K&N high flow filter will not make it quieter.
No idea but my friend who has a TC said that he removed his and noticed better response and to tell you the truth i did too. More than when i put in the drop in filter.
