1st gear transmission whine

I have an '04 Camry with auto trans that has developed a whine in 1st gear, not noticeable in the higher gears. Is this normal and nothing to be concerned about or is corrective action needed. I have searched other threads but none with this particular issue. I have 50,000 miles and the trans has not been serviced other than checking for normal fluid level and color/smell.

Depending on your car's in service date, If there is a problem, it may be covered under your powertrain warranty. Take it to the dealer and find out if your car has been in service for more than 5 years, if not, have them inspect and fix it. Report back and let us know what they find.

definately get it looked out especally if its still under warranty. if you think there is a problem keep on Toyota till its resolved. I just had my gearbox fail 6 months outside of warranty, toyota wouldnt cover it even though I complained to them about it while the car was still under warranty. A rebuilt exchanged transmission is $3400 +tax from the dealer. Just had a local tranny shop do it and it was $2400 + tax. get it looked at before you have to pay.

This is definitely NOT normal, especially if you never heard the sound before and your mileage is very low.

Do you drive you car hard and possibly damaged the tranny? Or stuck in snow/muddy conditions, where you had to rock your car back and forth. If you maintained your car and drove it with reasonable care, it must be a defect.

A trip to the Toyota dealer this morning turned out well. A mechanic rode with me and said what he heard was not unusual for the transmission and was not a concern. He did recommend a drain and fill even though the fluid was supposed to last for 100,000 miles. I will be looking for some type IV fluid.

Really? so something must have changed. If you never heard it before, why would it be doing it now? What was his answer to that? Why is there whining sound now?

I had a GTI a long time ago and when one of the gears broke (the reverse gear in this case), it made a whining noise when i reversed. I hope it's nothing like that.

Actualy on these transmissions, some have a whine like that. I have heard several do it. I would make sure it doesnt get worse, but other than that its ok.

Thanks for the responses. The car was driven daily by my wife and she told me the transmission whine was always there in first gear. I have drained and filled the trans twice now with Toyota type IV fluid. Hopefully the noise will not increase.
