5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I see nothing really wrong with that turbo'd I4, not my taste but what the heck. If that is rice (which you might want to classify it)...some other mentioned rides on TN are too. Does anybody know if the hp is whp?
Regardless of all the negativity for the car, it is amazing that there's quite a bit of mods done on it, both interior and exterior. Would be interesting to talk to the guy about it anyways. I wonder how he mounted that TV on the sunroof. The eyelids are interestingly done. I also haven't seen many Gen6s with front and rear splitters, regardless of how ugly colored those look at that car.
Props for the turbo job nonetheless, shows that there's sometimes people that more extreme mods on their cars that aren't on TN.
I'd think that 236hp is to the wheels, if not, it'd be kinda low for a turbo I4.
Doesn't look like he's using an AEM FIC like gene or Paul, looks like a greddy unit>?

+1 ....and the funny thing is if it would be a TN member he would be praised all day long. Whats up with that people jumping on topics like that?
well if he was a fellow member i would most likely say nothing if he posted up pics. if forced i would tell him to get a rksport lip kit instead. would praise him though for going turbo.
I mean no harm by asking this question. I only ask it because I am curious.
Why is everyone so obsessed with turbocharging the 2.4L I4 Camry? You would get monstrous performance if you instead looked into modding a 3.5L V6 Camry, no?
It is true that the few guys on TN with turbocharged I4 Camrys now develop more power than a standard 3.5L V6 Camry, but wouldn't all that effort and money have yielded even greater power if the project car was V6 based to begin with?

I definitely agree so much more with you. But there is a very large reason why the I4 Camrys are turbo-ed. If it was just as easy for the V6, then I'd be working on one now.
The thing about the 2AZ-FE engine is that it's the same engine as the Scion tC. Therefore, turbo manifolds are much more commonly available for the 2AZ-FE as compared to the 2GR-FE (V6). There are quite a few generic Ebay manifolds as well as branded ones. So with just the manifold available, the downpipe might be the same as well, not 100% sure on that, if not, it can be custom done by an exhaust shop. As long as you have the manifold, everything else comes standard, wastegate, bov, piggybacks/standalones (using the AEM FIC from the Scion tC works for the I4 Camrys as well, not confirmed for the 2GR-FE engine) Oil return and feed taps would be in the same spots as the Scion tC as well.
Heck, even a supercharger from the Scion tC may fit the I4s. You can even get BC cams for the 2AZ-FE...
If a company made the turbo manifold for the 2GR-FE to be more widely avaiable, there'd be a few more Gen6s with turbos. I've contacted a few companies on creating some, but it'd be very expensive due to the low interest. You can get a turbo manifold for the 2AZ-FE from anywhere ranging from $100-$300 on Ebay. Plus, you'd probably have to do a twin turbo due to the two manifolds for the V6. The only 2GR-FE that I know that has been turboed is the Camry from Cobb Tuning.
Last reason:
Only Gen6 I4s come in manual.
