5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So lately I have noticed I have a sound coming from the fan. It only comes when the air is pointed to the fans on the dash. Not if its to the windsheild, or feet. Only when its pointing directly at you (im trying to explain the position haha). Anyway its a faint clicking noise. Any ideas what could be causing this? Please let me know.
Take it to the dealer, we can't fix it from here...

The damn sound had gone for a while after having the A/C and fan on high for a couple of days because of the heat. Took it to service and now its back again. I had shown it to the shop foreman at the dealer but he couldnt hear it. He also had one of the other guys at the shop trying to hear it but he couldnt either. It was not as loud since the car wasnt moving.
From what I can access the sound only comes when:
The air is on the dash vent (not the glass) and the dash vent/knee combo
When the car is doing about 20+ mph
When the fan is 3/4 speed to full speed. If it goes to full speed its very hard to hear it but its there
Im scared to take it to the dealer because I dont want there to be rattles and such if they tear it apart and look for the problem. Has anyone had this problem before and know exactly what it was so I suggest that to the dealer other than them having to tear it apart and find it?
The suggestion from the shop foreman was that to drive a brand new car and see if the sound is there, if not then make an apt where the they will tear the dash apart and look for it. He took the filter out from under the glovebox and it was full of leaves but even without a filter there the sound was still there.
Any help would be wonderful!
Also, forgot to add, the sound started after driving about 1000 miles to Tampa and back on business.
-------------
My brothers 99 Honda Civic had a problem like this at once but a LOT louder and it was leaves stuck somewhere near the fan.
Once the dealer take apart your dash, it'll never be the same again.
I'd say, just leave it like that for now, if it gets worse, then dealer will be your last resort.
My sunroof was rattling for a while, and I remember thoots said if you take it to the dealer, they'll take apart all the headliners and make it worse. So instead, I gave my car hugs and kisses, and then it goes away.
See thats what I am afraid of and why I didnt go after it with the dealer. If its something as little as leaves and I can take it out in some way then that would be great!
I recall in my former Camrys periodic sounds that were inexplicable, that most often went away if there was really nothing to em. Regarding this vent issue, is it possible that something is in there or loose and bounces around when the fan speed is high enough to move it and create a rattling sound? Fan may not be strong enough to blow it out or it can be slightly caught, who knows. On a 95 Camry I had the little piece that allows for swiveling the vent slits break off and fall into the vent, it rattled for a while, then disappeared.
*Just some thoughts

Do you have the automatic or manual AC / Heat controls?
If Auto, could be the Ionizer......

Do you park your car under a tree? Could be leaf or leaves that were sucked into the cabin filter area. With the car off you will need to access the cabin filter behind the glove box. Remove the filter and stick your hand and check for loose debris.

Come to think of it, I did park under a tree and my car was covered with little worm looking leaves. I had to vacuum it out of the part where the windshield wipers reside. I will try taking the glovebox off and getting everything there. I need to install my LED light there anyway. Thank you!
