5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I never understood why Toyota did not release an OEM dual headrest DVD entertainment system option for the Camry. So I decided that since I have made a TRD Camry (that Toyota again did not release as a package) it needed the rear headrest screens to make it just that much better.
After doing a lot of research to see what could work, I came across an option that was offered for the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser (which really baffles me because there is not that much room in the rear seat of the FJ for an adult to sit comfortably and watch a movie). I compared the headrests from my Camry (dark charcoal leather) to the ones in the FJ and noticed that they were a 99% match. The only issue would be if the contol box for the rear headrest screens would actually communicate properly with the OEM Navigation Headunit. This is where I had to take a chance and order the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Dual Headrest DVD Entertainment System (part # PT900-35070) just to see if it would be compatible (this was during the December timeframe).
I have been on travel for work quite a bit since then but finally had some free time over the past weekend to begin the installation process into my 2007 Camry. Everything fit perfect and looks so nice now that it is inside the car but I did run into one small issue. The screens powered up like normal, played DVD/CDs like they are supposed to, the picture was really good, the wireless headphones worked awesome....but I could not get the audio through the car speakers using the AUX selection on the headunit. Also, the system does not come with any installation instructions...only operating instructions, so all of this was done by trusting my experience.
After some trouble shooting, I figured out that since it was not made for the Camry, the rear headrest screens control box was missing one wire that sent the signal to the headunit letting it know that an AUX input was connected. Instead of re-wiring the entire system, I came across a quick and simple solution. I must have my IPOD cable connected to the AUX input connection that is located in the center console pocket. This allows me to select the AUX input button on the headunit. Then all I have to do is remove the IPOD cable from the AUX input connection when I want the rear headrest screens audio to play through the speakers of the car. Now, here is the real kicker. I have to make sure that that IPOD cable is connected back into the AUX input connection before I shut the car off. If I forget to do this, I have to pull my center console apart so that I can reset the rear headrest screes control box.
Yeah, some of you might think that is a hassle but it actually is not that bad. The cool thing is that I am the only 2007 (GEN 6) Camry with an OEM Toyota Dual Headrest DVD Entertainment System.
That AUX situation would be a hassle for me. i would definitely forget. If anything, you should put a switch or something that would reset it.
Pics have been added for your viewing pleasure The problem is that I have to unplug the control box from the AUX input plug on the headunit and put it back to OEM, start the car, make sure the IPOD works, shut the car off, then repeat the steps so that the control box is plugged back in to reset the unit. So installing a switch or something will not work.

I have not seen them in cloth. The funny thing is that the FJ seats are cloth but the headrests come in leather....really wierd.

You lost me at hello. HAHA. JK. But I have no idea what this control box is. So you need an ipod or a device plugged into the aux in order for this to work?

I will try to explain it better.
The OEM Navigation headunit has an AUX input connection in the center console pocket that is located right in front of the shifter (this is normally used to connect an IPOD). Once the IPOD is connectted (cord actually plugged in) then you hit the FM2 / DISC / AUX button located on the right side of the headunit (see picture below)
If you push that button on the headunit without an AUX input connected, it will only toggle between FM2 and DISC (CD) because it does not recognize any AUX inputs connected. When you take apart the center console, the AUX input connnection that I talk about above has a wired connection that runs into the wiring harness of the headunit. To install the rear headrest screens, you unplug the connection from the AUX input connection in the center console pocket and plug the control box in between the two. This is supposed to allow the headunit to sense when the DVD screens are on and playing a DVD but since it is not made for the Camry headunit, it is missing the fourth wire which is just a sensing wire.
So by keeping the IPOD cord connected, it allows the headunit to sense that an AUX source is connected and go to that function. Since the rear headrest screens control box is pluged in line, you are basically tricking the headunit to think that an AUX source is still plugged in (DVDs playing in the back) even though the IPOD cord is removed thus allowing audio to be heard through the car speakers.
I probably have still confused you but that is the best I can explain over the net without showing someone in person.

Nope. You explained it very well that I understood. Just stupid that you have to start the car, turn it off and back on again or whatever the process was. But thank you for clarifying and explaining it in further detail
BTW, yes I know where the AUX button on the radio and port is located. Just didnt know about this control box thing-a-ma-bob and the wiring itself.
they look great just wounder about the brand because I Know the oem brand that toyota use for the dvds are invision.
the toyota brand is really that good?

yes they do I found the ones for the scion XB are a perfect match I saving for those
+1 for OEM parts.... -1 for the price you probably paid for the word "Toyota" on the players.
Maybe you got them for a decent price? If so, good for you man, it looks very nice and clean.
+1 for researching for fitment.
You can go to your local audio shop and ask them on possible wiring ideas so that you can hook up a little toggle switch or something as a bypass instead of having to take apart your console. Check it out.
Good job again!
