Rear Rotors

I tried to remove the rear rotors on my 00 Avalon but I ran into problems. The rotor was loose and not rusted to the hub but, it seemed to be hanging up on the parking brake. Of course, I had the parking brake off. I could wiggle it back and forth and when I looked behind there, I could see the parking brake shoes moving forward with the rotor.

Is this normal? If so, how do I remove the rotor without pulling the parking brake apart? I ended up putting the new pads on the old rotor.

if you are having trouble removing the rotor because of the parking brake... you need to retract the shoes. there should be a rubber plug on the rotor... remove it, and align the hole (and rotor) with the parking shoe adjuster. the adjuster should be on the bottom. i forget which way to turn the adjuster to retract the shoes, but you should be able to figure it out

If you still have problems with getting the rotors off after adjusting the e-brake shoes you're going to have to just beat the rotors until they come off. At that point, you are likely going to have to replace the e-brake shoes and the hardware. The brake shoes are availiable aftermarket, but the hardware is going to have to come from the dealer.

IF you have to beat it (as I did), hold a piece of wood (2x4) against the rotor and hit the wood and not the rotor directly, especially with a metal hammer. Hit it a few times on one side, then a couple on the other side.
