If it is a HO 5.0l V8 with 5 speed manual and not one with a 351 engine swap ...it might be a close call but you can at least make it a race. That engine has 225hp at 4000rpm and 300lbs torque at 3000rpm and they run mid 6's at the 1/4 mile and high 14's on the 1/4 mile. You got to be good to get that out of the camry (according to test reports you can)
...of course, if he has done it before and has slicks etc you probably don't stand a chance as novice racer with street tires.
yea cauz there have been people that have hit 5.9 0-60 and 14.3 1/4 times so thats why im wondering. all he has is the mufflers

Is this going to be headsup even off the starting line? I would showup with no more 1/2 tankful of gas, remove all non essentials from the interior (leave these at home) & trunk (spare tire, jack, etc) prior to staging. Win or lose, GEEVE 'EM (FTW)!
Instead of arguing it before hand, why not just take on the challenge. It's fun to do regardless, and at least it is somewhere safe. You never know, you may surprise him good. Just remove your spare tire. That's all I did and I managed a 14.131 @ 99.29 mph.
I'm that confident, that I am heading down to the strip again soon and going to improve my launch because I believe this car can crack into the 13's, even though it may be on the really high end of the 13.
+1
racing is racing its always fun and the chance to surprise your buddies stang would be worth it
throw out the front passenger seat, back seat, spare tire, tools, systems etc ... Fill in half way with premium gasoline and u are all set. Oh wait, mount in a camcorder indash. Ya now u're all set.
I had an 89 that was bone stock 5 speed with 160k miles, I ran a 14.4@96 - but I've been drag racing for 9 years.. In my opinion with a better launch than him you should pull ahead (flowmasters don't count as a mod on the 5.0s.. they don't flow very well, just add sound)
Next I had a 91 5 speed 5.0 and I couldn't get it to run better than 14.7@94 bone stock
Just make sure he doesn't have much else done.. to the 89 I'd added a CAI, 73 mm throttle body, cobra intake manifold and shorty headers, same street tires I was running 13.6s at just under 100... Added a mild cam and it was lower 13s
It doesn't take a lot to get them running strong..
In other news, a mustang in a poor state of tune with a lousy driver will be lucky to see 14s
My current 2001 GT is lucky to run a 14.1.. but that will change.. will be working on it once my camry gets here.
Sorry for the long winded post..
Oh, not sure if this will help you any..
I've got a regal GS (FWD supercharged sedan) with a good deal of work done to it, it's hard to launch, but I can still pull off 2.0 60's on street tires I'm not sure how any of these steps would help a camry but.. can't hurt ..
Again, this is what I do.. not recommending any of the steps, but maybe something to consider
-I would pull the ABS fuse to completely disable traction control - a little spin off the line is good
-I usually run it as I drive on the street except... I would take the headlight out that's ahead of intake box (thinking not applicable to Camry due to how its set up, but may be worth looking at.. I've seen gains near 1MPH trap speed doing this..)
-Slide your passenger seat as far forward as you can - every little bit helps
-lower tire pressures in front tires to between 25 and 30 (don't go too low it can slow you down), raise rears to ~40..
Lightly powerbrake at the light (maybe 1200 RPMs) then ease into the gas, don't just floor it right away
-Leave the car in auto mode, when trying to manually shift the auto I always seemed to run a tenth or two slower
-A cheap set of spring blockers (can be found at most auto parts stores) can reduce weight transfer and improve your launch
Oh and launch as soon as you see the last or second to last amber light come on - it improves RT, You'll start moving just as the green comes on - if you launch sooner and harder than your opponent, they may get overly aggressive to try and take you off the line (esp if they are a novice at the track also) I've seen it tons of times - Usually the younger guys in muscle cars - For some reason they don't like losing to 4 door family sedans

Huh? How is "smashing the gas pedal" require being good in a drag race?
I think this will be a close call but it would be a fair race. Like the other said, how you initially mash the gas pedal really matters, and I also recommend emptying the car (take out spare tire, take out your subwoofer, etc). Just put in a couple of gallons of fuel only and try to lose weight yourself before the race. Take a leak, a dump, etc. Shedding weight is the easiest way to go faster.

Just go to the track and run your buddy, and post the time slip up and let us know the results.
I would say the driver matters most in this case and not the car if you guys have similar power-to-weight ratios.
Which was exactly the reason we were giving him pointers on how -we- launch at the track, we weren't speculating lol just trying to give him the edge, since the cars would technically be close
