5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 09 V6 Camry transmission flares much like the 07 I had. My wife totaled out the 07. I bought the 09 thinking Toyota would have solved the flare problem. They have not. Mine seems to flare more the first 5 miles the car is driven. I see flares from 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th. I can't believe Toyota would let this problem go so long. The flaring seems to come and go. I flares a lot at around 40 going into high gear at about 2000 rpm. I'm afraid to take it in to the dealer. The 07 was reflashed and made the shifting worse.
The car has less than 7000 miles on it.
Haven't seen anyone else post about this issue with the '09...and no one else has complained.
Take it to the dealer.

I have the Issue with my 09 SE V6, I took it in and got the TSB applied....and it seemed to help for about 3-4 days (unless I was imagining things) until the problem returned...
Its irritating at best, but I guess I'm used to it now...I'm just worried that the hard shifting may limit the life of my car...

I have 2007 camry SE V6 with ~11,000 miles (yes i know i dont drive a lot), and have had flares before. I never got the TSB done because the flare isnt that bad. It would only flare 2 or 3 times per year. If i put 10,000 miles per year, maybe it would flare more.

Same here 2 or 3 times per year. Seems to happen when I start off in the morning before the fluid heats up and go around a corner or down a hill. I just assumed the fluid needed to expand a little. Now that is on my 07 LE v6. My wife has an 09 LE v6 and she has not had one of those yet. I assumed it was fixed by 09, mabe not..
...I am really wondering what is going on: The flare obviously happens in very few auto tranny Camry's and it is statistical almost impossible that the same owner buys two cars within 2 years exhibiting the same problem...what are the odds of that? Maybe the flare appearance is pronounced by the way you drive and the way the drive by wire learns your driving habits? Just a thought.

Yes, same here. It usually happens within a few mins after a cold start up (even in 80 degree temp). Flares only when im going straight from a red light or stop sign (below 5 to 25 mph- 2nd gear flare?). Rarely will it flare when the engine is warmed up.
As for my driving habits, i usually easly on the gas. I do about ~2,000 rpm (normal driving) and 2,500 to 3,000rpm (10% of the time). Everyone 6 months or so, its WOT for burst of fun
Try starting out with light throttle so the transmission shift at 2000-2400 rpm. When it shifts from 4th to 5th my car will flare almost every time. The flare will also happen when my wife drives the car. It does seem to flare more the first few miles and it flares more rpm's
I have an 2007 V6 with the flaring problem. I am using 91 octane on my car and since, the flaring problem is not as bad. It still happens, but the lurching/surging feeling is not as easily felt. As a test, I switched to 87 and didn't have the problem for about 100 miles and afterwards it came right back with a more easily noticeable flare causing a quick, brief surge of power.
Is it me, or does it seem like the flaring problem only really happens when driving at a normal pace (smooth acceleration, nothing too aggressive, sometimes just coasting)? When I accelerate a bit more aggressively (most of the time for me), the flares aren't as common and are definitely less noticeable.
Those who are experiencing this problem should take a video of it happening again and again on different days of the week and show it to the service guys at your local dealership.
I can recall reading about a few Camry owners in the past here on TN who were successful in getting Toyota to repurchase their cars under the lemon law if they couldn't have them fixed.
On another note though, it's sad to hear that this problem is still occurring on the 09s.
Nothing new here I'm afraid. My 07 Camry's first transmission flared. Then this tranny died and they installed an 08 tranny which is still working but it also flares (2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 to 5).

How long did the first tranny last. How did it fail?

Thats what i noticed too, it has only flared at a normal driving pace.
