5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
You can get Akebono ProAct ceramic ($56+shippinig, rockauto.com). These are FF friction rated vs the cheap Akebono Toyota sells EE rating. I heard good things about Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors (front $43+shipping). Since Brembo isn't available, get Raybestos.
If Raybestos comes out with $20 service grade rotors (red label) those served well too. Of course, If I need to spend more than $20 for rotors I'd get Brembos when available. Best on the planet IMO.

Thank you so much for the info, can I bother you for a couple more pointers.....as it stands now, I get a wheel shudder when I hit the brakes, front rotors need to be changed, so I will order the Raybestos AT rotors and akebono pads as you suggested. The rear pads are also worn, should I get the same pads ? Also the rotors look OK, and since front end does most work and is the source of vibration in the wheel, should I replace those rotors as well or just slap on some akebono pads without doing anything else? By the way, I plan to find a mechanic locally to install these for me, what is a fair price to pay ? Thanks much

I will second the Raybestos rotors, anything above their $20 entry level rotors are nice, the cheapy ones are not so nice.
The Akebono pads are also a good choice, but Raybestos makes some goods pads as well.
The rear pads should match the front, but it is not the end of the world if they don't. You might encounter noise problems on the rear switching brands/materials of pads, but it usually wears off in my experience. I put Raybestos pads on the rear of my camry to replace the OEM toyota ones. It lightly squeaked for a few hundred miles and then was fine.
It should take about an hour labor per axel at most to swap pads and rotors. I am not a professional mechanic and I can do both fronts in under an hour. Most shops are not going to be happy with your bringing your own parts, better to find a moonlighting mechanic if that is your plan.
www.rockauto.com is a good place to buy from, you can usually google up a 5% off code for them as well.
Thanks John and Kenny
I ordered some Raybestos AT rotors and akebono pads all around, will find a local mechanic to throw them on....I hope this takes care of the crappy rotors isssue I've run into.

Brake pulsation is usually caused by warped rotors, but can also be thickness variation or brake caliper problems. IMO it's better to replace warped rotors than to resurface them, but this does cost more money and assume there are no other problems that will lead to new rotors warping again.
According to Brembo box instruction, new rotors should be installed with new pads, not with old pads. I don't know why. That's what Brembo said and I did.
The caliper anchor pins and piston should not be sticking. It's also a good time to change out the brake fluid. Valvoline Synthetic DOT3/4 or Castrol GT LMA (Low Moisture Activity) are my favorites.
Thanks John and Kenny

Also make sure the mechanic use a torque wrench and tighten the lugs down in at least 3 stages (e.g., 25 lb/ft, 50, 78). Uneven torque is another reason for rotors warping.
As far as cost goes. They can go on as cheaply as $60 per axle for pad replacements. Might cost a bit more if rotors are replaced. Not sure about brake fluid change. For me it's like $8 for fluid but dealer charges ~$100. The parts you bought should be about $180 per axle + shipping? Rockauto site can give the latest price in the US.
You might want to check and see that the old pads wear evenly all around -- no signs of sticking (one thicker than the other on the same caliper) or tapered wear.

Thanks everyone who has chimed in. I replaced the front rotors with Raybestos Advanced technology "No Spin" rotors. They seem to be of decent quality and install seemed to be no problem to my guy. Brake calipers seemed fine as the piston was east to push back. Akebono ceramic act pads were installed. Rear pads were replaced. The guy had problem removing the rear rotor as he did not know that you need to rotate the disc and loosen the parking brake shoes (monkey). I did not know how to remove them at the time till I searched here. Anyhow, being rears and not too ugly looking, we threw on some cermaic pads on there. Did nothing to the rotor surface. Car is dead quiet and seems to stop well. Cant tell performance difference. Weird thing is the rear rotor which looked sl shiny before and you could almost see the concentric circles before are now more dull as if we turned them, I am not sure how to explain this. But whatever...no more front end vibration on braking and no foot pedal vibration (there was none before anyways) E-brake still works despite the guy trying to yank my old rotor off with shoes not being released fully (e-brake was off).

I just received my order of Raybestos AT rear rotors and pads from Rockauto.com. I ordered them Friday night and they were shipped first thing on Saturday. With ground shipping to MA, I'm very pleased with the the quick delivery via Fed Ex. I can't wait to install them, probably tomorrow, (Friday) or Saturday.
Thanks to those who gave input into this thread as it helped me to make my decision on the purchase.
