5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I found the original location for the aux input very inconvenient, so I thought I'd put it in a little bit more accessible spot.
I milled out a rectangle about the size of the aux connector, then fine tuned it with an exacto knife cutting around the edges until it fit.
I had to sand down the left and right sides of the aux connector to make it fit as it was about an 1/8 of an inch too wide.
Once it fit, I put some bonding adhesive all over the underside to hold it in place.
For the wires, I cut all 4 of them about six inches down from the connector and soldered on an additional 3 feet of wire so it would reach. I put some heat shrink tubing on all the connections, and covered everything with some braided sleeving.
The one step I haven't figured out is what to do with the hole where the aux input used to be. I doubt Toyota sells a "plug" that would fit in there. Any ideas?
WOW! That is really nice. The only thing I can think of is fabricate your own. Get a piece of plastic or something use bonding adhesive to hold it in place.
I suppose if enough people want it, but basically the steps were:
1. Cut a hole about the size of the connector.
2. Sand down the sides of the connector and opening of the hole until it fits.
3. Glue it in place.
4. Extend wires 3 feet to reach.
Very nicely done. You could try taking some measurements of the rectangular hole and then going to the hardware store or a place like Home Depot and looking for some rectangular plugs in either plastic or rubber. I'm thinking of something that may be designed for the bottom of chairs or tables to prevent scratching the floor. If you can find something slightly larger, you can always get out the exacto knife again to make it fit. Another thing you can do is go to a bone yard and see if they have any generation 6 Camrys there, and take the exact part off one of those cars, and cut the wires off and use that for a plug.
I am going to be doing something a little diffrent. I pulled the AUX plug out today and noticed the hole left behind. I think a blank from my tacoma will fit that hole. I wont be relocating the original AUX plug. If I get to it this weekend I will try to see if one of the blanks fit.
